Japan is still pretty assbackwards in regards to the internet and mobile tech.
They'll probably have barebones smartphones with no IM service, just text messages - though I do expect them to take a fairly big role in the new S.Link system, rather than just being stuff you get at the start of the day asking to hang out.

This is why I strongly dislike P4 despite it being a pretty good game.
The game is pushes the escapist fantasy way too far for me. Compared to P3 where the main conflict is treated like a responsability and not a group of friends hanging out solving mysteries, Tartarus literally exhausts you, and your friends can occassionally be dicks or unavailable like real people, P4 may as well just spam "you're amazing, senpai!" ad nauseam for 60 hours. It's trying too hard to make you feel like you're having a good time to have any meaninful conflict or interesting character interactions.
