Character Creation in RPG's is great. I always spend like 45 minutes to a hour on it. The more detailed the descriptions for classes, the better.

Real talk: allowing the player to create their character before the game is just bad design. By definition the player is the worst he'll be at the game at that point and character creation is probably the most important part of an RPG.

Oblivion averts this pretty well. You get to have a taste of archery, magic and melee before you create your class.

No but you're building a base for how you want to raise your character, so I wouldn't say it's bad game design just because you can customize your characters starting stats. That just sounds silly.

I always replay an RPG that allows you to create a character 3 time in this order.
>sensible, good, dex build, female
>reckless, bad, mag buld, black male
>any, neutral,str build, mess about weird look any gender
My black character can be substituted for any weird race/colour but it usually looks like Dennis Rodman.
