We hate games like Gone Home and Her Story not because they barely have any game elements, but because they are mediocre games that somehow have widespread critical acclaim, right?
Because I keep hearing people on podcasts like TOVG bitch about anons criticising Her Story because it's "not a game", and I feel like the actual criticism is that a shitty collection of video files is drawing attention away from genuinely good indie games that get little attention because their creators don't personally hobnob with the likes of indiefund.

clicking through menus on a screen (her story) or walking around an empty house (gone homo) are very minimal gameplay.
>super short
they dont last long. they're over in under an hour.
>lackluster story
the story is supposed to be their main selling point, but it's just mundane und uninteresting - not to mention very short.
>overpriced
compare these games to other games in a similar price range and they just flat out suck ass. for this money you could get meatboy or binding of isaac, both of which easily deliver at least 10 times more game time as well as vastly more fun. which ties into the next point:

they're just not fun to play. the act of playing is mundane and boring. there's zero replay value because outside of the main storyline there's absolutely nothing to do.

these games are objectively mediocre to bad, yet journalists praise them as the second coming of christ. if you compare journalist rankings, gone homo is of similar quality as GTA5 or Witcher 3 - an absolutely ridiculous notion! this overrating of "deep" "art" games is also a major contributing factor to our dislike of journalists.

Secondly, I never really bought the whole "not a game" thing. I love games like 999 and the only "game" part of that is piss-easy puzzles. Otherwise it's mostly an interactive story. But that story is really well told. That's the difference as far as I'm concerned.
I was engrossed by the story of a death game concerning nine passengers on a sinking cruise-liner with engaging characters and clever writing. I was significantly less engaged by walking around a house waiting for something interesting to happen only to realize the "twist" is that there is nothing interesting at all.

But I thoroughly loved my three hours on Her Story, sure it was short and the lack of a real ending or a clearly defined objective can bother some. But that's the only game I ever played where it felt like I was truly investigating, it was the first time that I was actually invested enough to actually use a pen and a paper for vidya.
Though I won't comment on the price because the worth you associate with a game like that is highly subjective. Though it's really not expensivebut I still waited till it was on sale to pick it up.

Mediocre is an understatement.
God of War, for example, could be much less popular and probably would be much better received on /v/ as a result. It is a mediocre game, but there are endearing elements and you are right in that critically acclaimed games are placed under much tighter scrutiny.
Gone Home and Her Story could be at any level of success and would be laughed off /v/.
At least following the success of Dear Esther. Yume Nikki still has a following, after all, and that's just a walking simulator.
