How durable were those older PS3s? I'm thinking of buying a backwards compatible one because I never owned any Playstations other than PS4, and I wanna play some games I missed. Were they as prone to breaking as the old 360s?

I'd recommend just getting a cheaper slim model and use the leftover money to buy s fat PS2 and use a hard drive in it so you can have access to almost the entire PS2 library for no extra money.

So yeah eventually gave up on PS2 BC and got a Super Slim which was worked well aside from occasional loud clicking (hdd?) for 3+ years, far longer than any single one of my 60gb PS3's lasted.
I had fat ps3 for some time, it was loud and hot as a jet, also google the whole reballing thing, early ps3 died quite often. You don't need to fuck with backwards compatibility really, it's more trouble than it's worth, you can just buy ps2 for pennies or emulate.
My MGS4 bundle stopped reading discs after a year and Sony refused to fix it without me paying $100. Fucking faggots.

I still got mine working after ten years and 2-3 death scares, I still love it though and bumped the hard drive up to 500gbs. The fact of you don't have to worry about tracking down physical memory cards too is also a plus

A couple of things.
The systems are all old by now and it was the first, as far as I know, computer like council. The systems before it had processing units and OS' but it was all mostly players. They played the games almost entirely off the disc.
With the PS3 and on the units are more computer like. They hold data, manage it, you can navigate folders. It's the natural progression, but unfortunately it meant they had the longevity of a computer and not the one of a DVD player.
If you really want a BC PS3, and I don't blame you, you need to look up some maintenance videos. For one, elevate the unit so that all ventilation ports have at least 10cm of open space. every so often remove the HDD and whatever disc is inside and vacuum the ports for a few minutes. When playing PS2 games take more breaks, it extend the life of a PS3 to run the games off the HDD over the BR drive.
You could also upgrade your PS3. I'm going to be doing that with mine in a few days, I'm just waiting for some parts to arrive.
you'd be lucky to find one that doesn't have the YLOD, about 80% of fat ps3 are estimated to have it by now

This is just a theory but %20 that still work might be cecha## and cechb## models. Those were the original ones and had different parts. Plus, rather than emulate the PS2 games they came WITH a PS2 engine built in.

Despite the OG PS3 being BY FAR the best version of the console in any way possible, the build quality of it outside of it's shell is fucking horrible. They were made with the knowledge they would eventually break.
