Aria of Sorrow is better than Symphony of the Night.

It has much better gameplay, the Souls for sub weapons are fun and diverse, the bosses are all challenging, the exploration is good with the world feeling more focused, and the difficulty curve is just right.

You can break SotN far too easily and everything is extremely easy even if you don't. It's one thing to look up a guide to figure out game-breaking combinations and another thing entirely for anybody with an IQ over 60 to figure out which two or three items can make the game go from easy to laughably trivial.

sotn is the only truly good one. The gba games are inferior in every way, gameplay mechanics, gfx, music, design, size of the map, number of equipment. Etc.

The ds games were decent in terms of gfx, but also inferior in every aspect. Especially the amount of moves available without having to go into a menu. No special moves, no dedicated transformation buttons.

How anyone can even compare them is beyond me.

It wasn't that hard for me, personally. I mostly used the Lance glyph paired with the proper elemental glyph I needed and got most of the game just fine. The only times I had to set up specific setups were against the Elevator Crab, the Shadowmaster, and Drac.

It's not perfect. In contrast, Order of Ecclesia was much more interesting and had a much better atmosphere. I only wish they would have added a Belmont mode. You know, bring back Simon or Trevor instead of putting Richter in a game every chance they get.

Richter is my favorite Belmont, but holy shit why can't I play Trevor in a Metroidvania?

Order of Ecclesia has the best characters, mood, challenge, and sense of adventure.
Portrait of Ruin has the best whip gameplay and bosses, and the funkiest music. Mastering weapons is a great idea, but they turned it into a grindfest.
Dawn of Sorrow has the worst map design of them all, worse than Harmony of Dissonance.
Aria of Sorrow came together so well, with great aesthetics, pacing, and responsive mechanics.
Harmony of Dissonance is fun to dash around like a madman killing anything and everything, but it's got the worst bosses and literally half of the game is filler.
Circle of the Moon has the best story because of its simplicity, it has good bosses, the card system is interesting, and the map design isn't the worst, but the controls aren't quite right and bring down the whole game.
It's been too long since I replayed Symphony of the Night, I don't remember much about except that it has GOAT music and the second half of the game is mostly nonlinear.

It's just time efficient use of game mechanics. Sotn has lots of cancels and momentum affected actions. There's normally no need to be that efficient because the game is so easy, but it makes replaying it a bit more interesting.

Symphony of the Night has no difficulty curve whatsoever and while it's a very pretty looking game and set the standard for Metroidvanias, with a great soundtrack to boot, the overall challenge, gameplay and consistency was vastly better in Aria of Sorrow.

Some of the boss fights in Aria were truly intense like Death or Julius.

Aria gives you a ridiculous amount of HP from the get go which nullifies all challenge the could throw at you unless you deliberately gimp yourself.
Controls are certainly not smoother than SOTN.
There is little in the way of sequence breaking, which is bad for a Metroidvania.
Souls are a neat concept but it encourages grinding, more than anything in SOTN, unless you know how to tamper with the RNG values.
Furthermore, DOS had better variety of Souls.(to bad the Weapons in that game are mostly shit compared to AOS)
And " the bosses are all challenging" is just such a ridiculous statement, unless you consider fighting a random Great Armor the epitome of boss design.

I played OoE, while I enjoyed it, I still don't think it deserves all the praise it gets.
Artwork was a HUGE plus though, going from generic anime to a much more clasic, western look was the way to go. Music was fantastic. The bosses are probably the best in the metroidvania line, specially the bigger ones that require some platforming.
But still, it feels a bit lacking, Dracula is a massive disappointment, it has a pretty weak story, I just feel theres something missing from the game, I don't like the weightless feel of Shanoa, though I understand it's due to the gameplay and level design, wich is weak in my opinion, there are not any particularly memorable levels other than the library or the lighthouse.
Maybe I was just burnt on metroidvania at this point, I'd give it a 7/10.
