Going with core titles here to keep it simple.
Story: 7 had some neat twists I didn't see coming, 10 has a nice bittersweet tone. One of those.
Characters: Half of 9's are great, but the other half of the characters are lacking. I'll go with 5, as long as it's not the ARR MATEY translation.
Gameplay: 5, tinkering with Job combos is always fun.
Minigames: As great as Triple Triad is, it's the only FF8 minigame worth a damn. So, 7 wins.

X had a very good story, Sin, The Calm, The Pilgrimage, the Temples, it felt so alive and real. And, made the mission something you really wanted to follow through with, despite all the tragedy's along the journey.

8 had a great character cast, and I enjoyed how they didn't seem like a rag tag group of misfits. 5 of the 6 are SeeD's, and the 1 that isn't is the focal point of the mission, it starts with her wanting to free her town from the Galbadian army, which is soon to head the main target of the SeeD operation.

X had a very balanced gameplay which really shook it up in a not terrible way. Swapping party members in mid battle at first sounded crazy over powered, but the balance of the game really made it a true need. And the fact that your turn isn't time was a good feature, it let the game play more true, and balanced. The GF's having their own abilities and an overdrive was pretty involved too. It made them feel vulnerable similar to FF8, but more interactive.

7 hands down, Chocobo racing was awesome, all the stuff you could do in the golden saucer really was cool. If there was something FF could keep and make as common as a Moogle in a FF game, it'd be some sweet arcade mini game hub. 7 did that right.

This desu. I never realized how solid X is. Think if it didn't have Tidus from Zanarkand, and was just the pilgrimage as it was intended to be for all the other great summoners who had done the path. That would be truly just as epic. I'd love to see a Final Fantasy: Tales of Spira series or something, where you'd play as different summoners, and go through the pilgrimage with different enemies, politics, governments, and rebel machina movements.
