MtG is probably the largest money sink for little return. 99% of what you're spending money on is utterly useless to you and won't sell back for much of anything. It's basically the equivalent of dumping a shit load of money into a freemium cell phone game.
The only money you should ever spend on this game is on drafts and on the cheapest you can possibly find individual cards to build your desired deck.
People get high off of opening packs and I cringe every time because of all that money that just gets whisked away for no fucking reason.

Uh, what? The value you get is what you want from the game. If your main concern is the value of these cardboard cut outs then I got bad news for you. MtG is a worse alternative to collecting stamps in that case. Some people just like the joy of opening boosters and the RNG that comes with it. Maybe you'll get a load of shit, maybe you won't, but at least it's an exciting gamble to some. Besides, not everyone who buys MtG even plays the game. Some people just do it purely for cosmetic reasons with or without caring for the value of cards. There's more to MtG than what solely exists within your hubris.

You can do some fun things with Allies. Especially if you build it around Kalastria Healers, Zulaport Cuthroats, and Cliffhaven Vampires. Nearly everything you do gives you life and takes some from them.

It's funny that in the 9 years I've been playing magic I've always wanted to try constructed, but every time I consider it I remember that its an enormous money pit and offers very little creativity with deck construction. Booster packs are worth more on average sealed than they are opened, if they weren't, the carefully curated economy would collapse. The Expected Value of a pack of SOI is $2.88 according to mtggoldfish, so unless you're buying them for less than that, cracking them is just provably a waste of money. For booster drafts, the 3.36 you effectively spend opening packs is worth an evenings entertainment. You're paying for the experience of opening booster packs.

I like playing two headed giant more than ranked. Ranked is full of tryhards playing the most overused decks.
Go with allies or UW enchantment control. These two things tends to be the best counters for the main deck archetypes.

This is a good thing, because it makes it painless to 'catch up' pretty much.
Not touching magic for a few years = a pretty hefty investment ether in singles or boosters to get into the current meta, including that MtG structure decks haven't been noteworthy in eons.
On the flipside YGO can pretty much get you back into he game with the current meta staples within 1-2 structure decks, and the rest via one of those series boxes you can nab for $30. You don't even need to buy any singles given the raw amount of cards you'll get from doing such. The only thing you do buy outright is whatever's the most newest series, otherwise getting what you need outside of the secret rares is a breeze and it's the only reason why I even keep up with YGO as I don't need to dump $80+ into making a concurrent deck.
