They did. It's a normal controller with a screen in it. If you don't like it, use the Pro controller, most games support it. Relatively few games do anything with the screen gimmick. You can frequently use Wiimotes and shit if you want.

Yes, We've seen the Gamepad can let you play without the TV and let you splitscreen without screenlooking, but when EVERY game has these features, are they gimmicks?
You could say having an X button is a gimmick by that logic.
The main point here being the games they make are literally remakes, rehashes, and the occasional unique game which may or may not be even good, let alone great.
Naturally there are exceptions, but the trend is there.

PC doesnt have native Nintendo games and never will, emulation is all you will get. Nintendo's strength is in their warchest of IPs that will never officially grace other systems besides those with the Nintendo brand. They can afford to make their console a gimped PC, because thats the way consoles are going anyways. Fighting the current wont save them
