instead of leveling up, each character gains points that allows them to move one space in the sphere grid. You get several spheres to activate different things in the sphere grid, such as the power sphere, magic sphere, hp sphere, luck sphere, ability sphere, and a key sphere which allows you to unlock certain points on the board when near them and progress through them. Every character starts in a specific place taylored for them, but one character can traverse the grid to gain abilities they wouldn't naturally get according to their class, like a warrior getting really beneficial white magic. Unfortunately, the sphere grid is oddly linear when you straighten out all the paths, which is at the expense of customization options.

FFX has an ability learning system where you both use experience points to to advance along paths and also use items that you find to unlock abilities and other sections of the path. This is the 'expert grid' which makes it easier to have a given character learn abilities they aren't "supposed to" much earlier (though it's completely misnamed, as the default grid actually allows you to do more advanced things and max out your characters more, the expert grid is more or less for fucking around).

I bet FFXV has some convoluted ass boardgame mechanic called the Ballsack where you earn points to dig around in your party member's pants for blue balls to unlock spells and abilities.
