They're straight up not at all similar. They're just polearms you use for drawing cuts- their name is derived from the ACTION of "scything," and even then it's still a bit of a misnomer because the movement involved in their use probably wasn't anything like a harvesting scythe. Harvesting scythes also didn't use a blade that was ANYTHING like what was on a war scythe. A farming scythe's blade was more like a long sharpened strip of metal the thickness of a spatula. They were bendy and more or less useless for cutting things in war because they had too much give (they were, after all, designed for cutting fucking wheat,) and thats BEFORE you account for the fact that the orientation of the blade and method by which the scythe was held was completely counter-intuitive to hurting other people.
Scythes make OK magic staffs I think aesthetically, but anyone who thinks they would make cool weapons is an edgy faggot.

Sickles were worse than knives and probably only used because they either were more commonly available en mass than knives (At least the kind you could expect to defend yourself with) to farming folk. When people think of scythes as weapons, that's not really what comes to mind. What people think of are more like short polearms with a curved blade mounted in the same style as a scythe, but aligned with the haft, which could probably be used as a weapon without too much trouble.
