There was a difference in the costumes but in lore, they were supposed to be the same "species". That said, I think the alien in Alien was a warrior (possibly even a queen), whilst most of the ones in Aliens were drones.

Yeah it seemed to be ALOT taller and more menacing than the latter ones in the 2nd movie.
Maybe again its just costume but different sub species would make alot more sense.
