The first game is basically the black sheep of the series. It lacks all the gameplay refinements the sequels added and Ratchet himself acts like a huge dick throughout most of the game. Insomniac saw the movie deal as a chance to go back to the first game and redo a lot of stuff.
Also, the movie/game isn't a reboot in the traditional sense. It's self contained in Qwark's story and makes several allusions to the fact that some shit has been changed.
