It's funny because if the PS4K is stronger that just means Sony got fucked over by how well they did. It is obviously a respons to the "upgradable Xbox" and the NX if it ends up being stronger. I don't have a PS4 yet so I'm kinda hoping it ends up being stronger. I also don't think normalfags will be too upset IF and only if, the NX is poweful + xbone gets stonger + old PS4 still plays games just fine.

The age of press conferences is over, literally everyone who still does one shits the bed every year they continue to do so.
E3 is an unnecessary mess in general which is only propagated due to no company wanting to lose out on advertising to other companies who do go to E3 even though in today's age of Facebook and Twitter companies can show off their flagship products every day directly to journalists and their intended audience. There's a reason E3 went away for a couple years in the early 2000s and it honestly had no business coming back.

Press conferences may go away, but E3 as an event is most likely not going anywhere.
The concept of E3 is becoming more and more mainstream by the year, it's like the christmas of video game announcements. It's hype at a fever pitch, you announce a game during E3 and the hype levels can get insane, and as we all know companies love hype.
Of course, smaller games can get lost in the shuffle, so it's a double edged sword, but if you're a bigger publisher? You want that E3 hype. You want your game to be a big deal.
