You know MML may not have great controls, hell they weren't even great for the time, but what it did have was charm.
I've found most people who shit on MML never played past the tutorial and didn't really give the game much of a chance and probably just wanted NES MM. The atmosphere, music, and story all leave a distinct impression on people I've found and the gameplay gets really fun once you get used to the outdated control scheme. Legends 2 is a much better designed game technically but honestly it lost some of the charm of the original by not being set on only one island.

I've actually fucked up really hard with this before. I have this cheapo Dynex lcd tv and I actually played through a bunch of games using it. For the longest time, I had been led to believe that all these PS3 games I was playing through that screen had input-lag and then one day I decided to replay Metal Gear Solid 1 on that monitor and KNEW something was horribly horribly wrong. That game made it obvious to me that the piece of shit Dynex screen close to a half-second of lag. If I spun in place as Snake and then released my hand from the controller, Snake wouldn't stop for another half-second. I swear, it was that bad.
I immediately stopped. Unplugged my PS3 and plugged it into my old tube tv and resumed MGS1 and then it was responsive. When I spun in place again and stopped, Snake immediately stopped. NO LAG WHAT SO EVER!
I don't know though, maybe the nerd has a good lcd monitor. My BenQ "gaming monitor" that I use on my computer doesn't have any display lag.

To be honest it was barely fun. If you wanted to play a good soccer game with arcade feel, you could have played almost every other game in existence back then like International Superstar Soccer on SNES or the deluxe version on megadrive or even the FIFA series. Is not like they were the football simulators that are nowdays almost all sport games back then were fare more arcady, there wasn't a need for a "fun" soccer game like there is noways.

At this point I think AVGN is like ACDC or Iron Maiden, well past their primes but still can put up a decent show when playing the classics but when they try something new it is completely underwhelming and always lacks something to compare favorably to the past hits.
AVGN now feels old and I think James knows that and which is why the channel has been pushing different content while still doing AVGN videos to please the demand even if the content isn't that great anymore, either because time have changed, or the conviction behind the makers changed or simply because the audience doesn't want to move on despite the signs being there all along.

I apologize if I'm being rude, but it seems so narrow in scope. I'm a huge Megaman fan, fuck, Megaman is my favourite videogame series of all time. I have literally thousands of dollars of Megaman merchandise, played and beaten every single Megaman game that has ever existed (except for Rockman Strategy because I just don't know Chinese, and, yes, I do know Japanese which is how I played all the Japan exclusives).
It does not make sense to me for someone to think that Megaman should only be a jump and shoot guy, only going left to right. In fact doing this so many times is what lead to sales of Megaman going down. They needed new directions, new ways of playing, new stuff to keep it going, which is what they did and it worked. Sure, maybe not endlessly, as we haven't had a solid Megaman game (not including that abomination SFxMM) in years, but look at how many people still miss Megaman today, and not just for the left and right shooting and jumping he did in the past, but for his RPGs, for his adventure games, for his spin off games like Battle and Chase or the Power Fighters. I know I miss them too.
It's thanks to the opinions of people like James who can't stand even the tiniest amount of text or cutscenes in a game that now the only game many people look fondly back on is Megaman 2. Back in the late 90s, Megaman 3 was the one every looked back fondly at, I still don't know when it changed exactly, but living in the past like that isn't good, and it's kinda what lead to Megaman's downfall.

People still mourn that MML3 is not going to ever be released, and I know plenty of people that really enjoyed the Battle Network series. Star Force was a rocky series, especially with 2, but 1 and 3 were really quite enjoyable and every single one of those titles made a profit for Capcom. Finally, X8 was the best X game since X4 and Megaman X Command Mission, while a decent game in its own right, was really just a copy of Final Fantasy X with longer load times.
