The gameplay is turn-based RPG mechanics, but you can run around and avoid attacks so it's not entirely like traditional RPGs.
But it does have a creepy atmosphere and music and the monsters are gross and cool looking. It's a fun game and worth playing for any horror fan, imo.
It's good enough. It's gameplay is like an RPG but more active in the sense in that you can move around and such.
Also every PE game plays differently 2 is RE-like and 3 is a TPS.

3rd was their answer to fan outcry. SE didn't care enough about PE to do it justice after the second one came out, so they game us some crap for the PSP, figuring fans would eat it up. When fans hated it, they now had the out "There's no demand for a new Parasite Eve game".
Very good game and worth a play if you like old-style, PS 1 era horror. It manages to blend the RPG mechanics really well.
There's also a bit of exploration in that you can go back to previous areas and they'll be new enemies and loot to find.
If you're going to emulate it then look up about swapping to disk 2. I had some problems with it when I emulated it some years ago but I can't remember how I solved it.

The problem is they no longer had the rights to PE, hence it not being a Parasite Eve game in name, hence it having effectively nothing to do with the previous two games at all.

What I absolutely hate is despite their attempt, they completely swapped themes from biological horror to soul/spiritual horror. Basically they took Parasite Eve and gave it the Kingdom Hearts/World Ends With You treatment with 3rd. Doesn't help they turned Aya into a nervous train wreck
I just wish they'd do something like a semi-prequel that takes place between 1 and 2 with NYPD still trying to clear out the leftover monsters
