The actual problem stems from the fact that all of the characters are extremely shallow and poorly written, with Krystal being the most poorly done due to just showing up. The games in general need better writing to make these characters more fleshed out and make Krystal actually useful. She has psychic powers. Why the fuck aren't they integrated into affecting the game mechanically in some manner? Shit would be easy and cool.

Like imagine a Star Fox game where in some fights there are enemies that move in places where you can't see them, and she can talk to you as you fly through the air describing the enemy's movement patterns to help get you to shoot in its direction and draw it out. Or maybe story wise she can be made to read minds and discover the motives behind your enemies. Make her USEFUL. That alone would improve her character and make her fit in more.

People don't want any other characters in Metroid because they get in the way of what makes that game series good, swiftly exploring an ever expanding map using your wits and weapons. At best case scenario, another character would interrupt your exploration with skippable story content. Star Fox doesn't have that problem, first of all, the game is fully voiced since 64, so you never have to have your attention split between shooting and listening and part of what makes the games good is the banter between cast members, so expanding that cast to include new characters isn't inherently a bad thing.
Also, Assault was a good game where Krystal was inoffensive, Other M was a bad game where Adam would spitefully hinder your progress arbitrarily.
