To be fair, unless you were used to the menus and looking over the options available, it would be a rather difficult game. A big factor in doing well in battles was managing your equipment abilities, and choosing equipment with good abilities but still powerful enough to be effective. If you just grabbed the biggest numbers that you could find - what you would expect from an inexperienced player - then fights could be a lot more difficult.
