I think it's strange that near universally everyone calls this game Spyro the Dragon 3, but the only official title its ever had was Spyro: Year of the Dragon.
>>
Applies to Ripto's Rage/Gateway to Glimmer too
>>
>>333303327

I've literally never heard anyone call it that before in my life. Spyro got the same naming treatment Jak & Daxter did, as it was shorted later to just Jak.

Spyro the Dragon
Spyro 2
Spyro 3

2 > 3 > 1

1 is the most magic as it's the one that started everything, but suffers a lot for the very same reason

2 is the most polished

3 has a lot of content and is the funniest, but suffers of too many minigames and separate areas

Does anyone even do this anymore

I feel like game development has sort of become segmented. A lot of the music in video games these days is really well composed and everything, but a lot of the time they don't seem to hit the tone and feel of any given area.

Not all of the time, of course, it just feels like it's more common to have generic orchestral music because the composer didn't sit down and feel out the game himself, he got told what music to make by people who don't make music.
>>
>>333311372
That's when games even have their own music and don't just use hot new licensed stuff, you mean.

Just a note, this version is pretty buggy.
Like the final boss has the default menu music playing and such.
If you want to play a less buggy version, look for the platinum release version, it has a few bugs fixed in it. It's the one spyro game in the trilogy where the one year dev cycle shows through.

That's a thing?
>>
>>333322310
That's how I saw it at least. Practically sony wanted the crash and spyro games to appeal to children to take away some of n64's demographic. Not only did the themes become a lot more cartoony, but the challenge of the game being a platformer became less and less evident. It was like spryo 1 was its own challenge of platforming and exploration, 2 retained some of that and brought minigames, and 3 just became minigames and silly moments with hunter. To me 3 was a huge disappointment, before the other games like enter the dragonfly came out.

I prefer Elora. Reminds me of a Saytr but with a Fawn half. If the classics get a revamp, I'd be interested to see how they'll redo her design.
>>
>>333322813

Think you're memory may be broken. Spyro 1 was challenging platforming, Spyro 2 was literally nothing but cramped levels and minigames. Spyro 3 combined the best of both worlds.
>>
>>333322813
If I remember correctly Insomniac talked about increasing emphasis on minigames to make sure that the games more stuff to do, and they feared they would became boring if all three were just 3d platforming. Also one of the reasons was apparently that as spyro was a 4 legged creature, they couldn't add gameplay elements that would require use of hands to make any sense. It think it was an early ratchet and clank interview about why they switched characters. Basically they ran out of ideas
>>
>>333305753
2 and 3 have NPCs that ruin the flow of the game and are therefore inferior.

http://www.insomniacgames.com/community/showthread.php?3658-Insomniac-Interview-Vault

OPM: How did you feel about giving up Spyro? It's Universal's property, but it was your baby....

TP: That was a choice we made. We left Spyro behind because we were running on empty as far as coming up with new ideas. We'd run out of things to do with Spyro's move set because he doesn't have hands. That's why we introduced new characters. With Ratchet, we had an opportunity to take the lessons we learned on Spyro and expand on them, and move in different directions with the platformer. And since Ratchet can use weapons and gadgets, it's almost limitless what we can do.

With the case of 1, I think I'd rather not experience it for the first time again. I played it Christmas day 1998 and games were very different back then in that most of them were very simple. Now I can appreciate it in its simplicity.

Sorry but I have dumb question. Playing spyro 1 and how do you open the metal boxes with the chains around them?

I know these feels. The Crash 2 hubs were spectacular.

If it has a key lock on it, find the key. If it doesn't, you have to charge into it super fast from a running pad thingy-majig.

Do later Spyro games follow the same thing, or do they have just the arches with the different skybox inside (which is fucking crazy, by the way, that shit makes me rock hard every time you fly into it and the level transitions)? It's been so long since I've played.

Lock? Key.
No lock? Rocket.
No rocket? Super charge.

Hunter sounded super condescending in Spyro 2. I never played that one as a kid and I only remembered his voice from Spyro 3. I played throug all three games and I felt like I was being talked down to by Hunter in S2, he just really sounds like he's explaining things to a child

I didn't find that game that great otherwise either, I'm sure it's partly due to nostalgia. Playing the other two just give me this warm fuzzy feeling from my childhood. But I also feel like the first game has much better platforming and the third game has more fun minigames, even though I don't really care for them in the first place. The level design felt pretty boring in the second game, I like that the music had the same style as the first game though. Third one changed pretty much in that regard. Maybe I'll replay them again and see how I feel this time

I get you, I loved that game as a kid. Replayed it like fifteen years later and first thing I thought was wow I didn't remember this game has tank controls

>3 makes it so you have to go through one of his levels to earn back that ability

Wait that feature was in Spyro 2?

That looks like it would be a really good Quake deathmatch map. Just add in teleports to the gate and exit pad and plunk the red armor on that ledge.

Yep. Nothing told you about it, except maybe the manual, but I don't think I have that with me to confirm/deny. You just have it from the get go for whatever reason.

the speed tunnel in 3 with the seal and the rhynocs in scuba gear was worse.

I have PTSD from that shit.

Yeah i remember that being a rail pain in the ass, but I remember doing it as a child as I havent replayed it ages. Might pick it up again and see if that part still still kills me

>>333344930
Huh, didn't even realise. I figured out it had a minimap though, only used it once when I couldn't find that hidden area in the spring(?) hub world. Felt like cheating

Speaking of PTSD, if I hear the sound of those toung-frogs in Misty Bog I still get cranky goosebumps

A new Spyro game could be a lot of fun but I don't trust the devs. Ripto's Rage consumed hooooooours of my life back during the PS1 times.

Interesting looking back at this game and how it was built around that whole analog thing. Was it seen as a gimmick at the time? I was like nine years old so I didn't really have any opinions one way or another. In retrospective it feels like it would have played just as well with a more normal control scheme and the analog waggling was almost like a motion control gimmick. It's still cool how it's a collectathon where the collectibles try running away from you though

This is one of those videos that pops up often, and you know exactly what it is before watching. But one that's worth watching again every time
