Once expired, you had to call the Xbox live support, who would then transfer you to tier 2, who would then transfer you to the single GFWL support call center (who was only open mon - friday 10 am - 8pm pst) so you could get a new key. Upon reaching these clowns (all of whom where Indian, I shit you not), they would require that you take a picture of your disc, the case, the manual, the cd key inside the case itself (usually a sticker) or the back of the manual where the key was sometimes located and then a picture with all of them in the same picture. If you emailed the support personal you where talking to these photo's, they would generate you a new cd key activation ticket and a new CD key would be emailed to your GFWL registered email in 2-4 weeks. Most of the early GFWL games had this feature, and the limit was around 3-5 installs. It wasnt until GTA 4 and Bioshock 2 they removed the feature completely.

They convinced xbox players that paying for P2P servers and the /rights/ to see ads was the best option.
