GTA V's story fucking sucked. They tried to make it way too much like a mainstream movie or TV series with the central storyline around Trevor and Michael. It would've been way better if they took the route of the other games and just focused more on one neutral character, like Franklin (who was seriously underdeveloped), and his progress/encounters across the world.

lamar would have made a much better protag than frank, since he's actually willing to take risks and do crazy shit without whining. franklin never seemed happy about anything until the very last moments of the game.
It should have centered around Michael, with Franklin and Trevor as side characters like Sweet and Cesar.

Story should be presented to the player through the world rather than through NPCs and dialogue boxes. Take a look at stuff like Zelda 1 or Souls where the player enters a zone because he wants to enter a zone not because he was told to enter a zone. Video games are unlike any other media in that you have complete control over the character, their failures are your failures and their triumphs are your triumphs. Where as film and novels will always have you exist as a fly on the wall watching a story you have no control over take place.

There were only 69 missions in the game (despite having 3 protagonists), GTA 4 on the other hand had 88 missions.
Also a lot of the missions in 5 were just setting up for heists or dealing with Michael and Trevor bitching at each other, the game's story really goes downhill once Trevor enters Los Santos.

The problem with GTAV's story was that Rockstar let the satire infect the plot too much. In the older games, it was all just a part of the backdrop while the story was about the characters doing their business. Here, they shoe-horned in the government angle as a vessel for them to the piss out of politics etc. It was completely unnatural.
It should have just been about the three guys wanting to make money so they take scores.
