It's only slightly better. Maybe it's because I'm on chapter 3 but the game play is really easy and repetitive especially with the monster combinations you can have and you can have all 4 out since you get buttloads of SP all the time.
I'm hoping it'll branch out to be more difficult and require more but I'm not gonna hold my breath. The loot system is a bit like dragons crown when at the end you pick up loads of shit and then choose to sell or keep. And the monster system is basically a way to use all the blue blood you horde besides leveling up. You can also use monster fetishes to power up the ones you already have instead of making a billion useless ones. Which goes into another point, you should upgrade your deck capacity to two so that you can carry more into battle and level up the ones you make faster.
They gain exp as long as you have them in a deck out in the field but they don't gain exp unequipped.

This is how I understand itPope Ludegert was a member of the Curia many many years ago. At the time the nations of the world were at war with each other. She decided to summon the Nightlord in order to give humanity a common enemy and force everyone to stop fighting each other. Unfortunately for her the Nightlord wasnt actually a super evil malevolent entity like she thought so her plan fell apart. That was when she "killed" the Nightlord, drank his blood, gained his powers and acted as the evil entity herself while also being the leader of the Curia.The whole sacrificing Saints system is because Ludegert can not control the Nightlord powers forever. Every 10 years or so she needs a new body so she created the Saint system in order to farm the purest possible maidens and partner them with life partners in order to prepare them to be her new bodyThe actual Nightlord is the black cat. Who somehow became that after he was killed by Ludegert. He may or may not be in love with Ludegert. I'm not really sure. But he see,s to still be working for Ludegert and guides Arnice to the Blue AltarThe true ending as I understand it is Arnice becoming the new Nightlord and then removing herself from Lilysse's memories. A year later Lilysse comes back to the island and is guided by the cat to the Count's Manor where the Blueblood Dragon appears again. It's at that point the Arnice appears, slays the dragon, and declares that shes back. My theory is that by remembering Arnice she somehow free'd Arnice from having to be the Nightlord and possibly returned the Nightlord powers to the cat.
