He actually outgrew his edgemeister phase and became much more liberal and socialist in later life, once he had some experience of other people and the world in general. He supported the New Deal and wrote some stuff about the Republican Party where he tore them apart.

Not excusing his racism, but his views changed dramatically. Unfortunately he died just as he was becoming a much, much better person.

>>

This >>333264923 except he didn't say that the Award is given to anything that's progressive and has social justice values. It's like the Indie Game Awards except on a larger and more important scale. If you want to see what happens to video games if the SJW take over the whole industry then just look up the Nebula Awards and SFWA.
>>
>>333262974
So was/is everyone that's pushed society forward.
Read origin of the species by Darwin, check out the man that unlocked the human genetic code James Watson, also a racist. The inventor of the liquid propelled rocket? A racist. - The list goes on and on, every major paradigm shift we have in tech comes from a racist.
>>
>>333265228
It's just a very American mind set. It's like how some Americans today can't understand how different countries across the globe have different values than they do, and they have this strong and self-righteous feel that it's their duty to liberate the rest of the world so that they, too, can subscribe under their values. American Imperialism hasn't gone anywhere, it just changed it's name and face.

That's not really important. Take At the Mountains of Madness for example. The Elder Things weren't immortal gods who exceeded human comprehension, they were just squishy alien starfish who lived, died, and thought similarly to us. The horror comes from seeing how their great civilization on Earth fell and was forgotten and knowing it's the inevitable fate of our own. Cthulhu gets rekt by a boat in The Call of Cthulhu anyway. It didn't kill him but a few sailors and a boat were enough to stop Cthulhu's return or whatever.

Sunless Sea.
I've found the "snippets of lore" way of narrative to blend really well with the exploration and danger of the world.

It's the most FUN I've had in a while with games.

I'm usually not that much into "story is more important than gameplay" bullcrap, but I really think this game makes the discovery of lore an actual core part of the gameplay.

If you don't mind reading (Lovecrafy approves) and sailing a lot this should be an awesome experience.
>>
>>333265702
I was quite sure that the horror didn't come from their civilization being lost and forgotten, but from the realization that humans had come from these strange and grotesque elder things.

The Republican Party of the 1920s was very different than the one we have today. When he says the "Republican idea" I have a feeling he means it in the sense of being part of a republic, since he had said he would have been a loyal subject of King George, if he had the opportunity.

By 1930s the Democrats were the clear liberal party in the US, while the Republicans were conservative and big business minded. Lovecraft showed his support of the New Deal, so it makes sense he would be writing this scathing attack in regards to those who opposed it, which were mostly Republicans who saw it as 'class warfare and socialism' -

Might be, but becoming mad as you get closer to the truth is a Lovecraftian theme, and Bloodborne has that with the enlightenment mechanics.

none

Lovecraft doesn't work with visual media.

Your best chance is in radio dramas and audio books.

"something so horrible that describing it in detail would kill me and make you the reader lose your sanity" it doesn't work on games or tv.

>>333267904

>>
>>333269092
He mostly quit doing that shit and started describing things in great detail in his later works.
>>
>>333269092
This. Visual media and hell even AUDIO media doesn't work when the entire theme of the setting is 'words that can't be spoken, visions too wrong to comprehend'. On top of that, Lovecraftian horror is a VERY bleak setting in which, at BEST, struggling like crazy and losing tons of people/characters will delay the awfulness for a while longer. You don't win, there's no victory, and the universe is a cold place full of things that will one day devour us.

Not a great setting for any videogame.

Disagree 100%. Lovecraft inspired stuff works better visually if the artists are creative (see: Bloodborne). I don't buy into this "it's so terrible that you can't even comprehend it!!" fluff that Lovecraft wrote. It didn't invoke much horror. It's shoddy writing and basically asking the reader to do all the work for him. The Night Lands did Lovecraftian bleak existential horror better and before Lovecraft was even a thing.

Silent Hill series. Cursed locations, incomprehensible creatures (closest I've seen at least in a visual medium), a sense of hopelessness (besides Heather, the best anyone does is escape), strange religions, the slow unraveling of the truth, and a constant questioning of the main character's sanity are all very common in Lovecraft's work.

More like, gnat wakes up Cthulu, Cthulu swats at it briefly, gnat runs into face, Cthulu fucks off back to bed.

The point is humans are small and the universe gives -10 shits. In bloodborne the great ones are "sympathetic in spirit" and apparently bone women a bunch. This is odd.

see that's the one aspect of lovecraft that I always hated

people in his stories have the fortitude of a bean pod. One look at a fish monster and bam, he's a heroin addict who jumped out a window.

It's not their cosmic psychic powers that drive people mad, but an easily graspable concept that somehow drives them mad. Well not counting Nyarlathotep.

>>
>>333272818
Knowing there is a cosmic thingie sleeping below the surface is pretty frightening, and knowing there might be even worse cosmic thingies somewhere that you don't know about is even more frightening.
Also, most of the dudes who kills themselves in those stories do so because said cosmic thingies are after their asses, and death is way better than whatever Dagon or one of his pals has in store for you.
>>

>In bloodborne the great ones are "sympathetic in spirit" and apparently bone women a bunch. This is odd

Not really. The Dunwich Horror is all about a woman getting boned by old ones and some of Lovecraft's creation, like maybe the Yith, could be interpreted as sympathetic to humans.
