They somehow manage to both be peak of there series, and the harbinger of series downfall after them
though personally i prefer cod 1&2, but thats just cause like WW2 better.
RE4 is still a flawless game though.

COD 2 had the same effect. It followed in Halo's shoes and cemented 2 guns and regernatig health as permanent features in console shooters
