This. Veering into /tg/ shit, but BG is pretty much what I want most tabletop games to be on a mechanical level. You're not a walking god of doom (well okay you kind of are but not on a stats level) who throws nukes at the world. The magic items are nice, with quirky backstories even for the most generic shit, and a lot of them have very minor bonus powers that keep you from being showered in forgettable +2 Swords of hitting shit better.

I love how even something simple like the army scythe which is just a light crossbow with faster fire rate has a cool history attached to it. He's a thief and an illusionist.
Basically treat him like a thief outside of combat and as a mage inside of combat.
Use his invisibility spells instead of stealth and he can find traps while avoiding combat and inside combat he's your typical mage minus necromancy or whatever illusionists miss out on.
Mages play a key role in the games to remove buffs from enemies and as crowd control + party buffs.
Use him for removing buffs and casting haste like you would any other caster + with the added bonus of being helpful outside of combat.
Plus when he gets the epic level abilities he has access to use any item... which is just overpowered out the dick.

Besides kensai/mage, what is your favorite overpowered combo?
I really like cleric/ranger, as due to engine limitations they get access to all druidic spells, so it has much better offensive than a cleric. And with ranger's innate talent for dual-wielding, they can do some mean shit with crom faeyr + fail of ages with some cleric buffs.
I also like the Blade kit (Hear'Dalis uses it), even though people usually hate bards. If I remember correctly, offensive spin makes all your attacks hit for maximum damage, and they can use improved haste and tenser's transformation on themselves. It's not a kensai/mage, but something like a more balanced but similar idea version of it.
Inquisitor is sometimes overlooked, but it can carry your group against casters with his ridiculously powerful instant cast dispel magic and true seeing.

Dual classing is only a pain if you go high on the first class. Anomen lvl 7 fighter is a good treshold, and 64kxp is litterally nothing compared to all the goodies you gain. Actually, if you want to optimize your Fighter/Cleric, you should dual at 13 for the exta .5 attacks per round. The 1.25 million XP it takes to reach 13 lets you reach level 38 as a Cleric with no wasted XP, and, conveniently, level 38 also happens to be the final level where you get an increase in your spells per day.
The downside is that it takes a bit longer for your abilities to come back, although the downtime is not as bad if you plan your adventure around it.

Once you get to 2 they are amazing damage dealers who can run faster than boots of speed.... but that's not relevant in 1 at all.
So do his quest, get the really nice magic items from it and then just say goodbye to him until BG2.
I kept him through all of 1 and you can use him as a sort of scout but any fighter outshines him in one especially considering they can actually be hasted.

I play co-op with a friend and we each control 3 characters, he's understanding that I need to be able to pause mid-combat to aim my spells so that they don't hit him.
He also knows that BG2 is near impossible to play without magic/thieves.
If you can aim magic and keep your entire party alive while fighting beholders without pausing while someone else controls other party members then congrats I don't believe you.
