The new one is in a new galaxy, so I'm assuming the past games will either not be mention, or retcon a bit.
That said, if the game has fun 3rd person gameplay, and good characters, then I'll probably like it. I loved Mass Effect for the characters, the worlds, and fun gameplay in 2 + 3. I don't have the gameplay in 1 by any means, but it is stiff compared to 2 and 3.

I think it's the opposite. While the universe was really well made in 1, the whole Reaper thing was set up great as a goal to work towards, with an impending doom that intends to ruin everything.
And then you just go and do other shit and dick around and then SOLVE LITERALLY EVERY PROBLEM IN THE GALAXY BY YOURSELF IN A WEEK because dicking around in the universe was more important than setting up a conclusion to impending doom.
The problem was that they tried to do both the Reapers and also overindulge in the world building, and so both of them felt half-assed and mediocre.

Installed all three games a couple of days ago, completed bunch of side quests and two story planets and jesus christ the game is boring as hell. And it was my favourite of three. Going to download a save and try ME2 but I don't know anymore. Recently I replayed BG2 and played both new tonm raiders because they were short and easy and I could just relax. Turned 27 a couple of days ago. I think I'm getting too old for complex vidya but not too old to love it again.

I liked Garrus in ME1, but I completely agree. He was nowhere near close to being the absolute bro that Wrex is, yet BioWare kept pushing him in every game and you kind of feel like taking him along because he's familiar.
I really wish Wrex would have been a squadmate for all three games, I always traveled with him. The other squadmate was Tali, Liara, or Garrus depending on what I needed for a mission.
