The idea when Nvidia had their 400 series GPU's was "1.7% yields" "wood screws" "house fires"
and when the 500 series came out, all of that shit disappeared
meanwhile. AMD's HD5000 series couldn't fucking hold up because of shitty driver support that caused numerous crashes in so many different games to the point that people had to configure their own driver once it was installed.
Oh wait they fixed it right? not really, AMD came out with their 6000 series GPU's and nothing changed. The HD6950 was a superior GPU to the GTX570 but it could never keep up purely because of shit drivers.

Far Cry is literally the worst game to do any benchmark with, this has been true since FC3.
Each one of them run like ass, no matter your card.
I run the division with almost everything maxed, the game is beautiful and I get anywhere between 60-80fps with a 970.
I struggle to maintain 60 on FC4 with medium settings, on top of the game being very average graphically.
The same is true for a 390. Far Cry is literally the bottom of console tier garbage games on PC these days, in terms of graphix, optimisation, etc. Its meant to run at 900p 30 fps low settings on consoles, nothing else matters.

I have a 970 right now and am planning to upgrade once Pascal and Polaris come out but I honestly don't know which to get. Nvidia has some cool features but is apparently being scummy. They release drivers more frequently but sometimes they're fucked up. There's a chart above showing the 970 has a bunch of microstuttering too. Guess I'll just have to wait for benchmarks once both are out.
I heard Polaris is using a 256 bit busy though, which is weird because AMD generally is better with bus sizes than Nvidia.

Unless i'm having reading issues the problem seems to be areas with poor multithreading. There are two areas murdering a single core resulting in very poor performance. It doesn't seem to be related to the gpu at all.
In fact i'm expecting this to run muuuucchhhhh worse on amd cards (the cpu usage being considerably higher in dx11 games with amd gpus).

You mean driver. Only 364.41 was broken, the other drivers having issues is because of 364.41 and Windows 10.
Windows 10 driver management didn't flag the 364.41 driver properly. This caused it to install 364.41 and then overwrite some of the base display driver with default Windows 10 VGA drivers, leading to the disaster.
Since then, driver installers cannot remove the parts of 364.41 that made it thorough, because they're considered Windows 10 VGA drivers and can only be managed by a Windows 10 administrator account.

Like I mentioned before if you can find the 8gb 290x for cheap then you've hit the jackpot as it's literally a 390x. If you don't then don't worry as you'll probably never run into vram related problems since vram is very rarely the limiting factor unless you're running like 5 8k skyrim texture packs simultaneously, which you most likely won't be lol. The sapphire 290x should do you good for a few years yet.
