Star Ocean is "one of" my favorite video game series of all time (born from the Wolf Team, creators of Tales of Phantasia on the SNES in Japan). A JRPG series inspired by Star Trek, blended with high fantasy, this is right up my alley. I re-played every Star Ocean game last year, in order, one after the other, and it was an epic ride following the entire series' storylines through the generations. I'm very curious to see what tri-Ace will do with this new one, being it takes place between Star Ocean 2 and SO3: Till the End of Time. Since it'll be on a current gen home console, I have all the faith in the world that this'll be epic all the way around (gameplay, story, etc.). Sci fi, fantasy, & JRPG fans should not miss this one.

I do play Tales. That's the biggest issue: both SO and Tales first came out around the same time, but Tales is the only one to really progress in mechanics. Tales started adding fighting game features while maintaing general RPG party play. SO can't even bother to add a real block button, they just add weird shield gimmicks, yet fully reward offensive actions anyway. The two series are night and day, and I always found it odd that SO never fleshed any of its features. It just arbitrarily drops and adds some, but is still content with basing the entirety of combat around 1 or 2 massive damage skills.

You can't really get away with as much on SO3 and 4's higher difficulties (well, only Universe in SO3, because of the 4D AI bug), but I won't argue against Galaxy being too easy.
SO5 has a 7-person party in battle, and enemy groups can get pretty large, so that's probably the biggest difference since it changes the flow of battle greatly. Other than that, I feel like it's a bit of a hybrid between the good parts of SO3, 4, and IU. There's still a limit of 4 active skills, though, and if you don't like SO combat, I don't think 5 will change your mind.
