It undermines the direction of the original by giving it an artstyle that contrasts with the tone of the gameplay, the narrative, and the music. In addition to that, the lighting is signifigantly worse, the fact it's on a handheld further undermines the tone by making it a game you can play conveniently rather than one you play because you're emotionally invested, and overall it suffers from generally being a lesser version of the original. The gameplay is more or less the same except for the ice arrows and the zora swimming and the bosses, but if you know one or two things about what makes people like games, you'd know that gameplay only accounts for about 65% of the fun you're having.
Overall, it's the same game and really you can like the 3D game much like you can like the N64 game, but the N64 version overall is better and the 3DS version is just newcomer dev practice that exists to make easy money.

That's masturbation anon. I agree with you for the ice arrows, but the zora swimming had barely any use. It was fun, but it didn't change much if not for removing some sequence break trick that could break the third dungeon.
The whole 'handheld undermines anything" is dumb though. It is more practical and it is not a bad thing. The eagle statues had a retarded save system and being able to save on an emulator at any time is way more harmfull to the game than saving on the handheld.
Everything about the art contrasting with anything is quite subjective I'd say.
