Starting from the E3 2013 trailer(when the game was changed to XV) the character portraits had a much more realistic look to them. In early trailers and concept art, they distinctly looked almost anime-styled. In the new trailers, they have much more realistic skin tone, texture, feathering/detail in the hair, etc. It's why Prompto looks like some kind of crack addict now instead of generic JRPG sidekick #2368
The thing is, they added all that detail, but the overall structure and proportion of the faces is still the same. The result is kinda like those "realistic" versions of cartoon and game characters you see floating around the internet -- in other words, not pretty.
