I'd say it's second only to B2/W2.
It's definitely hard as fuck compared to recent games. The only problems I had with it was that the selection of Pokemon feels really thin stretched across two regions, Kanto still doesn't have much going on in it, and the level curve is all over the fucking place.
If you're going to Emulate it try Sacred Gold/Storm Silver instead, it makes the game much harder and adds a huge selection of Pokemon that are all catchable in the wild.
