I hear there was a mod that balance it out but I can't find it and terra-arcanum is temporarily down.

Just finished this game last night for the first time. Its probably one of my favorite games now. Too bad we never got that Journey to the Center of Arcanum game, that would have been pretty great.

How come this game and Fallout1/2 has some nice violent gibbings and nice squishy sounds when it happens
Like when you kill a wolf in 1 hit it literally get's cut in half.
or when you point blank burst fire someone in FO1/2 you get to see them lose their arms and head with each burst. Even a fucking Deathclaw dies like that.
Or when you use the laser guns you can cut even Super Mutants in half.
Also every attack that connects makes a satisfying squishy sound.
Are the other games like Baldur's Gate and PS:T like this too?
>>
>>333129960
All the Infinity Engine games have great gibbing.
So does Pillars of Eternity.

>and has actual AI scripting and profiling now
This was the most perplexing thing for me when playing the game. IWD had scripting and here we have a similarly designed tactical rpg without it? I realize you have to cut stuff you'd like to put in but higher difficulties were just so tedious with the amount of micromanaging. I was thinking about by the white marches when both parts came out and going back. I hope they become a bit more ambitious in terms of writing and encounter design for them.
>>
>>333130759
I know, before th e expansions I would always get bored when I got to Twin Elms.

I've since started White March part 1, but i still feel like I'm forcing myself to play it.

Great story and writing

Combat is so so

If it had good combat, it'd be the best cRPG around.

It's on GOG. Wouldn't spend money on it though, with troika being dead and all.

i did a merchant playthrough but could only blow it up or do a new world order
>>
>>333132713
Real time against slow enemies, turn based otherwise. Combat is horrible either way.
>>
>>333132713
turn-based. Only switch it to real time to speed up the process of busting down doors/containers (ps you can punch any structure or golem down at the expense of some hp. PYROTECHNIC AXES can also destroy structures and golems without losing durability).

Whoever owns the ip gets a cut, it's not like it suddenly became public domain. gog gets a cut for the convenience of you being able to dl it whenever. Wait for a sale or just pirate it.
>>
>>333133078
Which you have to individually craft in advance using materials you literally fish out of trash cans, while mages just have to take a little nap to get all their mojo back.

I'm not saying they aren't fun to play, they totally are. Plus if you're playing a steampunk game it'd be a waste not to play a steampunk technologist. But the devs totally dropped the ball on balancing the two sides.

I disagree. BioShock was good too.

Arcanum really is a great game, with a great story, great environment, and just plain comfy.
>>
>>333132650
Do you really think devs working under a publisher get money per each copy sold? They're paid a fix amount. If you want to pirate, pirate. No need to make excuses for it.
>>
>>333132559
If you actually played the game you would know how terrible tech is compared to magic. Set your speed to 10, get haste and you can spam harm literally any encounter in the game without even getting touched. And when I say literally I mean literally. It's fucking retarded how broken the game gets when you use haste and maxed speed stat.

fallout for roleplay and combat

>>
>>333134873
>icewind dale

>>
>>333134872
BG is not that beginner friendly. Having to learn an entire ruleset before playing the game sucks for many players. Fallout's combat, on the other hand, is much simpler (for better or worse) which imo makes it a better beginner crpg
>>
>>333135271
The rules are easy though. Lower AC is better and lower THAC0 is better. I know jack shit about DnD and can play through them fine. They have great manuals too.

It is beginner friendly. For it's time. Problem is everyone got so used to hand holding since those days and god forbid you have to actually learn something to play the game properly. Everything MUST be intuitive and obvious.

walk out into the wilderness until your map icon turns into a blue globe, then you can actually travel to places. eventually mages can teleport or you can take a train

>>
I actually dislike the use of Steampunk when describing Arcanum. To me Steampunk is a fantasy realm where Victorian era tech has evolved beyond what history has already gotten to. It's Sci-Fi but using the 1900s as the frame.
With Arcanum it's more a fantasy setting set at the industrial revolution, there is nothing truly ridiuclous when it comes to technology and so i dislike the term Steampunk to Arcanum.
Look I am drunk and would like some (you's).
>>
>>333136546
I don't think I agree. Most games released in 1988 didn't actually require the player to memorize the manual. Games like FF Tactics and Starcraft were easy enough to pick up without reading anything. It's just IE games because they're tied to that tabletop ruleset
>>
>>333137049
But they don't require you to read the manual. I know I sure as fuck didn't and I knew nothing about D&D back when I first played BG1. Just read and think about what you're reading instead of skimming over.

I loved the shit out of Arcanum.
Tho, 10 years later, i still have no clue on some of the abbreviations they used to make.

Or some story hooks, if anything.
It's good to have these options (Like at Bates; either help him or sabotage the engine) but who'd purposefully act like a dick? Also, the whole gang stuff in the Tarant outskirts.
>>
I remember teleport and disintegrate spells monopolizing my playthrough.
>>
>>333128826
The Welsh are the sheepfuckers lad

>>
>>333136434

The official patch was made by employees who stayed on working without pay just because they loved the game so much. It's a fucking tragedy too because they were within a hairs breadth of getting Fallout before Bethesda snatched it out from under them.
>>
>>333137132
I didn't really *understand* AD&D's mechanics until I actually started reading about them; maybe that's just me, though.

I still think Fallout is a much more beginner friendly rpg than any D&D-based game and that's what I'll keep recommending

I hate how you can count the encounters with enemy magic users on one hand.

Yeah, the first time your follower resurrects you is fucking amazing. Then again, Virgil also did lotsa retarded shit like trying to heal Magnus until he would run out mana. Another awesome moment is when you learn there's actual use for second tier spell from dark necromancy.

Also I don't understand why fags complain about the lack of balance between magic and technology. Of course magic is more powerful, it's fucking magic.
>>
>>333136506
>tfw spending hours walking to town on first playthrough
>>
>>333138121
Part of the lore though is that the magic of the world is being usurped by technology
>>
>>333137362

Someone who wanted to roleplay? The game is built around choices like few games ever have been. What I love about Tim Cain and the people at Troika is they basically set up the world and then asks themselves how a player would go about breaking the game with the possible choices availible to them. Then instead of taking their ball and going home like Bethesda does preventing the player from ever making any "problematic" decisions they reward the people that get creative. That's how a game should be made. Reward people for thinking outside of the box instead of railroading them. Arcanum may be the best example of that design philosophy in any game ever made.
>>
>>333138159
why on earth would you do that? theres literally nothing but trees

Bioshock was trash, just System Shock 2 with worse writing, voice acting, level design, gameplay and a movement speed like wading through molasses.

>>
>>333138836

Yeah it's it's own thing. Vaguely Tolkienesque but really built on it's own foundations. Most of the games lore is built into the game itself gradually revealed or implied through your various encounters and explorations. It's a really well built world though. It's got it's own pantheons, histories and conspiracies. It's a fucking shame we never got journey to the center of Arcanum. I would have liked to have seen more.

I'd say the same thing about Planescape. To be honest this has way better combat than Planescape, but Planescape was still a better experience for me.

Pillars has the most atrocious pathfinding and party AI during combat I've ever encountered among isometric games. Almost cried yesterday after the pain of beating PATCHED PoE recently upon watching a BG1 video where 6 characters neatly assembled around an enemy they were ordered to attack. No getting stuck endlessly trying to pass through an npc in front of them or running around from one npc to another because they won't let him pass. Fuck Obshitian and fuck Unity.
