The Metal Slug characters and Crash Bandicoot, because they cant swim by themselves, they need some swimming equipment to go through underwater.

Metal slug characters CAN swim. They just need a fucking helmet to be able to breath underwater.
When they fall into water in a non-swimming segment of the game they die because of some piranhas eating them alive or something, not the inability to swim.

I know in at least one game (Aria I think) you can't swim because Castlevania water is acidic and drains your health for some reason.
