No hold the button shit. Make it play like a regular action game. Fix the terrible input delay, I don't care if the animations have to play out second long transitions, cut that shit out entirely. The defense button now dodges or does Bat Within-style last-moment parry. MP is used to cancel out of animations in normal attack strings so dodging out of attacks doesn't feel clunky but isn't free. Change the warp to a different input, add a heavy attack button. Change magic entirely, no grenades, make it as simple as possible: it should be as seamless as Ninja Gaiden. And for fuck's sake, add some hitstop or something. Teleporting around at 15 fps leaving fairy sparkles everywhere doesn't convey any kind of impact.

That's it. My problem isn't with the combat changes because it looks about what I'd hoped it would be, if a bit slow. My problem is the hack job done on the story. Tabata took what was looking to be something solidly Western-focused and re-Japanified it. Ridley-with-a-sword became Tabata's Yamato Nadeshiko Waifu, Highwind's been cut out of the story, Regis went from a caring father with a "business"/country to run to a homeless guy who's betting it on a son that looks like a Naruto character.

Also what the fuck happened to Noctis Orgy? Did he get replaced by Cor or what?

This, it's fucking magic. You look a the guy and you focus and he combusts, that's how it's supposed to work. I thought it was going to be real-time FFT as they showed it in the 2013 gameplay trailer, where your level and the level of the spell determined how long you had to wait before the spell actually worked. Grenades is the worst possible thing.

Have the attack button attack whatever is in the direction you are facing. Not zoom over to the closest enemy. Holding down the button doesn't do anything except maybe a charge attack. Evasion distance based on whether you tap or hold down evade button. No hold down dodge button for god mode. Make a skill for that or something. Tapping the attack button when you have a spell equipped makes it either hit the nearest enemy or whatever you are locked on to and not automatically go into aiming mode unless you hold down the button. Get rid of warp points and make it so you can aim your warps like a hookshot when you aren't locked on. That's about all I got.

I know this is showing air combat but the warping to replenish mp is a bad look of the combat as a whole.
Players need to learn to incorporate the broadsword into their gameplay and make use of it's a ability to replenish 40 mp a hit.
I've seen people stagger the IG and continue to spam air doge and shuriken when that's the opportune time to use the broadsword.

I don't know about "fixing" it. I'd just make it more stable for starters, and then maybe to add an extra level of complexity add a timing-based strike mechanic kind of like the first Witcher game had - like maybe you'd do a slightly lower base damage amount for just holding the attack button for auto-attack, but if you tap the button to time your strikes perfectly you get a slight (noticeable, but not OP) buff to damage for being good.
