Remember when the only way to way a DVD on your XBox was to purchase this? What a crock of shit.
>>
Worst than amiibos shit.
>>
>>333079021
By the time that and the Xbox were out, everyone had already been using a PS2 as their DVD player for years.
>>
>>333079148
The DVD remote had more uses than Amiibos.
>>
This was the ???? of my early console days

the only way to way a DVD
>>
>>333079021
The cost of the remote was most likely for the cost of the DVD royalties
>>
>>333079905
Beta was better than VHS.
HD DVD was better than bluray.
>>
>>333080041
it was $30 iirc
>>
>>333079021

It was because the license to use DVD was attached to the remote control package.

It kept the Xbox cost down. They were allowed to use the DVD drive format without paying the movie licensing fees (to sony) on the backend... unless you wanted to by buying the controller.
>>
>>333080190
It was $10
>>
>>333079927
I'm almost enjoying my anger!
>>
>>333080174
What movies came out in HD DVD? is it truly dead now or is it still around?
>>
>>333080190
>>333080289
I can't remember what it was, but it was my first dvd player and the remote was worth the price. Keep in mind the controller wasn't wireless.
>>
>>333080328
fuck no. it died in like 2009. there are a few good titles on it. i don't recommend it because the slimline cases they come in are often contaminated with some case residue that destroys discs over time.
>>
>>333080174
>implying either HDuhduhvduh or Blushit was good
>HEY GUYS OPTICAL MEDIA IS DEAD LET'S BRING OUT A NEW FORMAT ON OPTICAL MEDIA
>GUYS
>GUYS
>GUYS
>>
>>333080601
Optical media will never die for collectors or anyone who actually values owning something
>>
>>333079021
I had this don't even know why. Even back then a DVD player was about the same price (30 euros)
>>
Remember when Nintendo made it so you couldn't play DVDs on the Wii so they could avoid the license fee? Nintendo could have turned it into a living room media box, but instead they focused on the waggle fad.
>>
>>333080328
I remember buying 300 on HDDVD for about $5 when they stopped selling the players and 360 addon.
>>
>>333080289
No it was 30.

remember when the only way to play online was to pay monthly fees?, oh wait, they still do that
>>
>>333080762
On a related note, this is part of the reason I think Nintendo will dump optical discs for carts. I bet they resent paying the ~$30 for the Blu-Ray drive and license fee.

Thinking back do you remember the money you paid for Xbox Live or the fun times playing Halo 2?
>>
>>333079021
I don't know why but the OG Xbox had some of the best looking colors and devices for it. That green on black just felt so futuristic. It reminds me of playing Burnout and Voodoo Vince.

I hated the white 360 interface. I'd love if they could add a retro UI on Xbox One with the original startup of the original Xbox and 360
>>
>>333081259
Yeah but the times also came at a cost of $50 a year so you almost tricked yourself into having more fun.

Then Halo 3 happened and you knew your prayers weren't false. The gameplay was actually legit.
>>
>>333080174
Ive got 300 hddvd
>>
>>333080174
How was it better? I just liked it because your HD DVD player could play both DVDs and HD DVDs
>>
>>333080996
That's the most aggressively I've seen Germans act since 1941
>>
>>333081617
Do you really?

How is the quality?
>>
>>333080174
You can't stream anything online that comes close to the qulity of bluray or HD DVD. That is Unless you are supplying the source yourself. Not even netflix 4k comes close to the high bitrrate that you can get from a bluray disc.
>>
>>333081450
>but the times also came at a cost of $50 a year
Actually for me I had to pay for DSL service to actually play Halo 2, so that was a bigger expense I'll remember.
>>
>>333079021
REMEMBER WHEN THE 360 HAD A SEPARATE HD DVD DRIVE?
>>
>>333082048
Yeah I'll never forget having to use my report card to get my mom to pay for another year of xbox live, money I could have used for another gamecube game or something.

Still the times were good.
>>
>>333080174
hddvd only supported 1080i while blu-ray used 1080p
>>
>>333079159
the PS2 was also a cheap DVD player, which is why people bought it in the first place.
>>
>>333079021
Remember when everyone bypassed this by soft modding their xbox
>>
>>333082197
No, that's bullshit.

The big advantage of HD-DVD was that it had weak copy protection. I'm convinced half the reason Blu-Ray has never fully caught on is because no-one wants to go to the lengths to watch them on their computer.
>>
>>333081797
Do some research on video format and quality. Then look at the specs of both HD DVD and bluray. and see which is better.
>>
>>333082503
They used the same codecs and shit, but at the time hd-dvd discs were smaller.
>>
>>333082426
Why has there never been an officially licensed blu ray player for PC?
>>
>>333083519
You can get PowerDVD but Blu-Ray copy-protection standards are crazy high so it's crazy expensive and rather limited.

Compare that with DVD which runs on fucking anything after its copy protection was cracked almost immediately.
>>
>>333082318

I didn't. That remote was pretty good. Plus the X-box was the only DVD at the time that had VHS-like fast-forward/rewinding.
>>
>>333084446
Any DVD players that have that VHS like rewind and fast forward?
