I roleplay in single player RPGs. I pick a character and in addition to the stats / look / class whatnot define his character for myself. During the game his personality might change, he might learn things, become more or less moral, but they always get basic, unchanging principles that don't change.
Skyrim becomes a much more interesting game when you do that at least. My character is an Orc and thinks most people in Skyrim are whiny bitches that revere him because they are pathetic. It's fucking autistic, I know, but it's fun

Ehh.. Skyrim has a good RP factor I suppose but I think I prefer Oblivion or Morrowind for properly immersing myself in a roleplayed character. New Vegas also is a good game for this.
Used to, every community in every game has ALWAYS gone to shit though, usually after it goes free to play and all the children dive in.

GarrysMod had some good serious RP servers but you're bound to find elitism and mingery without question, especially these days in GMOD's state.
World of Warcraft is a great source of RP (if you stay away from Pornshire) primarily on Moon Guard and Wyrmrest Accord, though if you actually want to RP you'll need a subscription. SWTOR is a pretty bad mmo imo (so much grinding) but it does build a nice looking world with decent character customization. GTA SA has "LS:RP" where you can RP as a hood nigger or doughboy or whatever tf you want. Space Station 13 also has quite a few RP servers, and if you're into furry garbage Starbound has also got it's share of RP servers.

RP is alive in CoH. The "game" aspect of it doesn't function, that is you can't fight or anything, but you can create a character and fly around in pretty much every single zone and chat with people, perform emotes, etc.

Best RP i ever experienced was on neverwinter nights persistent servers. The Fact that there were actual GMs who could play along with npcs + fuck tone of RP useful mods helped it a lot. Probably best mmo experience i have ever had. Unfortunately after that whenever i stumble upon any role play in other mmos i just cringe. People do not know how to properly role play in the first place and the mmos do not really support RPing in the second place. It is really sad.

Do they plan on adding combat back in? That all sounds incredibly tempting, but without the actual gameplay being included, it would feel like only half the experience to me.
So much of the old RP experience for me was achieved through combat. Leaping in to save someone who almost died, and then tagteaming content with them as allies. Picking up a mission with my supergroup, and then quipping not-so-witty one liners as we rolled through a warehouse of thugs. Things that make it feel more alive, and more like a comicbook.
I might still check it out, but... Without even basic combat, the game would just start feeling hollow.

Although I suppose if the aspect of RPing involving that social interaction doesn't work, then yeah, I suppose he wouldn't be able to make it work, since RP involves socialization.

I used to RP in Garry's Mod. Lotsa fun, me and a few friends would either run a gang or a store together.
You guys remember the house in the back corner of the RP map like every DarkRP server had? The one with the secret exit from the basement? Well, one time, there was a gunsmith set up back there, and me and my boys knew he had somethin in that basement. So, we went down in the sewers, and tried to get in. The server had a no prop surfing rule, and as law abiding citizens, we followed that. However, there was no rules against getting a boost from your friends. Two of my gang members lifted me up on their shoulders, and I got into the exit. I then snuck in, took the stuff, threw it out to my homies, and lit the locked door on fire. I think we had 2 money printers, a case of revolvers, a case of those automatic shotguns, and some kind of drug. Great times.

If you really want to get into it, roll a stealth class, level up to the point where no one can see you anymore, then stalk people who RP randomly. Keep doing that until you're confident enough you know the norms to participate. Then whisper a friend or just see if you can find someone at random, who will put up with your assburgers and practice on them.
