I built a mechanic spider for a project. The DS3 is inexpensive, wireless and has a shitload of analog inputs, so it allows for much finer controls of anything if need be. Mostly movement in this case.

Thinking of blowing my load on an xbox elite because I hear the dpad pieces are great and the cable is solid but decided to order a ds3 for now. Interested in the wiiu classic but bluetooth only connectivity does not interest me. I don't get this wireless meme. I'd take a braided cable over wireless any day of the week.

Steam controller feels similar to the 360 pad (plastic wise). Inputs all feel pretty good apart from the bumpers. Triggers have very little throw. Since it's quite hollow some buttons and the rumble can be damn loud, not a problem for me since I play with headphones.
The touchpads are great once you're used to it, they won't replace a d-pad for many games though.
Gyro is great. Don't expect a plug and play controller.

If I EVER need to open up your controller and put a strip of fucking tape between the plastic connector and the cord because otherwise the buttons randomly press when playing a game, your controller and its design and engineering by extension is fucking shit. I prefer the PS4 controller. Xbone layout is nice, but the buttons the controllers break down fairly quickly. PS4 controllers are good 6+ months with the only issue being how smooth the rubber gets.

My thumbs rest comfortably whether they're resting on either stick, the buttons/d-pad, or any combination of the four. Are you using a different controller as a frame of reference? I don't prefer it for most games and I really didn't like it for a long while, I preferred my other controllers whenever I had a game I wanted to use a controller with.
But after trying a bunch of different controller options for Tree of Saviour the Steam Controller is absolutely perfect. It doesn't need a camera rotation stick but it does need a lot of supplemental mouse usage for navigating shops and interacting with menus which I can use the left trackpad and click/double tap features to take care of. On top of that I can map the menu shortcuts to a grid on the right trackpad which is perfect. The controller is still a bit weird but it fills this very particular role in a way that no other controller possibly could.

The DS4 fits my hands well but the analog sticks are pretty shitty in my opinion. The thumb rests are too small and the rubber wears out over time. Also the sticks are too short so they have less range of motion than the DS3 and 360 controller. Absolutely terrible for shooters. Luckily you can buy analog stick extenders but it shouldn't be necessary. I feel like a try hard faggot for buying Kontrol Freeks.

Though if you're using it for rts/fps primarily then obviously steam is better but as a general controller the xbone rules since it can do fps decently as well as platforming and fighting.

They were actually better for racing games than people necessarily appreciate. I remember Melbourne House making this crazy sounding claim that Gran Turismo was supposed to be played with the d-pad and buttons, but they actually released a PS2 racing game that controlled way better with the pressure sensitive d-pad than the analogs.
At least functionally speaking a real life brake pedal is a pressure rather than positional input anyways and console racers don't use 1:1 steering input with controllers. (although now that I think about it I wonder what was up with the analog controls in Grand Prix Challenge anyways)
Anyways using the pressure sensitive face buttons for throttle and brake was pretty common until analog triggers overtook them.

M8 I just came off of KB/M and XBox 360 pad and I can say Steam Controller fucking rocks. Playing DS1 and Dirty Bomb is great with it. The mouse like joystick function is a godsend in action games that sometimes require aiming, and movement and aiming in kBM games works too well.
I will lobby one complaint against it to be somewhat fair: the relatively small face buttons in an awkward position often leave me pressing Y instead of X, but it happens less as I get used to it.
