It's 100% social.
Your entire progress is based on how frequently you talk and respond to other peoples' conversations and responses as well as your fashion, and you can't afford better clothes unless you talk a fucking lot (or just spend real money on microtransactions).
Basically the game has hundreds of pre-installed questions it asks everyone at random, and you can see everyone else's replies and reply to them yourself. Some dialogue trees can get hilarious, even without the "miifotos" (photos).
