I think it's more the case of 'flavor of the week/month/quarter'. /v/ seems to amplify both positive and negative emotions towards something, so when there is a craze about a game (especially niche) it seems like an entire board is in agreement that something is good. Things change quickly when the group circlejerking about something gets bored with it and the group that didn't give a fuck starts getting annoyed with constant spamming and the thing becoming mainstream. The Witcher, FNaF, Undertale - the list goes on.
