THE VR DREAM IS DEAD!
ok SONY
oculus died the moment facebook bought it. it's like google trying to do a social network, it's just not going to work. people are stupid but they realize it's not a good idea to give so much control over their lives to a single company
If it squeezes your face like that then it's too tight.
>>333025759
>Literally everyone who played oculus for 10 minutes have those.
Ok.
Anyone who honestly expected this "VR" to be anything but a gimmick deserves to have their wallets eaten. ESPECIALLY after Facebook bought it.
The other options aren't much better.
>>333025704
>they realize it's not a good idea to give so much control over their lives to a single company
Completely untrue, the average consumer doesn't mind being fucked sideways.
> Sony introduces VR for 400
> "hey thats pretty cool, mass adaption is needed in order for VR to succeed in the long run"
> Sony introduces additional $400 PS4k for the optimal VR experience, everything else will be total shit
And it's ruined.
>>333025814
You must not have checked with myself or any of the people I've shown it to.
>>333025928
What the fuck did you expect? Did you think the PS4 is able to properly render the required minimum for a good VR experience?
>>333025704
>they realize it's not a good idea to give so much control over their lives to a single company
No. They just dont want a VR headset for browsing facebook and no gamer ever expects Zuckerberg to make a single good game.
FB wants it for social only and the social people dont care. Oculus will bomb hard.
>>333025704
Facebook fucked it but not because of Skynet paranoia, they just restricted the project too much.

>400 dollars VR headset

>>333026014
>Did you think the PS4 is able to properly render the required minimum for a good VR experience?
not at allI hoped they would somehow pull something really creative and make it worthwhile regardless
I hope VR fails, I didn't want another generation of dumb gimmicks like waggle. Hell, at least waggle sometimes added to gameplay, VR is just about the "experience". I guess there's some extra control with head tracking, but I have yet to see that used in any meaningful way that couldn't also be done by a keyboard.
The Oculus already has fb integrations and ad space set up in it. Say goodbye to freedom

I think VR has a promising future, but it's also maybe 10 years or so before we actually see it develop into something more than a gimmick. The VR we're seeing right now is like the first attempts at 3D games.

Has MagicLeap done anything new, or are they still just hiding all their shit for now? You need a KILLER APP if you have no games. Look at the fucking Nintendo 64. It literally had like 2 games at launch - but at least it had a killer app - Mario 64.
What killer app does VR have? Shit fucking all.
Man future generations will look back at VR the same way we look back at people smoking in the 50s nowadays.

While i agree with you the technology can't improve without early adopters. If a sizable portion of current adopters followed the logical course (waiting for 'better' tech) then there might not be enough demand to drive creation of better tech, or at the very least, progress would be very, very slow.
Imagine, for example, if Nintendo's Virtual Boy had been successful, we probably would have seen 'Virtual Reality' systems showing up in more refined forms, or as addons around the PS2 / GC era, but because it wasn't successful the entire trend just died for another 20-30 years.

nintendo
>>333028164
Who knows?
Nintendo tried motion controls and glasses-free 3D and neither of those managed to stick around passed their respective gen.
Sony tried Playstation 3D and that died a horrible death.
Microsoft tried camera based motion tracking and that failed.
Everyone and their mother is trying VR and that's failing.
About the only thing that's really stuck around is some form of touch screen gaming that went on mobile, tablets, DS, 3DS, Wii U, Vita and PS4. Nintendo are doubling down on multi-screen gaming with both their DS consoles, the Wii U and it looks like the NX will use it in some form. None of the competition use it though so you can't really say it's changing gaming.
If the NX being a console/handheld hybrid, I could see that turning heads. Especially since the Vita already provided the groundwork. Sadly, like dual screen gaming, I don't see the competition jumping on board so it'll be doomed to Nintendo only irrelevance.

Unfortunately, "physics" in the sense of the dynamics of reality can't be simulated, because simulation assumes away what's important about reality. Once you decide you want to impose objects and essences on the world, like "players" and "weapons" and "NPCs" and "damage," you no longer have physics per se and instead have whatever model popped in to some programmer's head. All we can really hope for is slightly less shitty models, which isn't so much physics as it is "technology."

You use both your hands in zbrush.
one to draw and one to manipulate the various modifiers and handle the short cuts.
You simply don't have the same level of precision in VR - nor will you ever unless you run with the same setups (tablet, keyboard).
VR can improve 3d sculpting productivity in the sense it can make your work space huge - it won't do anything for improving the actual sculpting process.
Using touch, the motion controls, or any kind of 3d spacial tracking - especially without any kind of tactile feedback means that will always just be a gimmick.
hell , you would be better served sculpting with real clay or wax then 3d scanning in the scuplt than you would be by trying to "hand sculpt" in 3d VR.

>Literally the only video games I can see genuinely BENEFITING from VR are porn games.
Stop thinking about the validity of game ports from flatscreen to VR.
Games that go well on flatscreen kb+mouse aren't going to be working well on VR and vice versa.
Room based puzzle games on classic doesn't work nearly as well as on VR for example. Picking up and rotating an object is clunky with mouse+kb. With motion controllers you just reach out, grab and rotate as if holding it with a pincer. Or you can lay down on the floor and actually look underneath a table to see the clue written there. That's much more immersive than doubletapping crouch to go prone and then looking up at a neckbreaking angle as with mousekb.
It's a different medium. It's like comparing board games to computer games. There's an overlap for simple turn based that works for both, but the majority of computer games operates in a space that's simply not feasible to achieve with boardgames.

Nah - it won't. Ignoring the keyboard for a second - just focusing on a drawing table (essentially the same precision as a pen and piece of paper) - there is no tactile anchor with the Vive controls - they float and are essentially extensions of your wrist movement.
Imagine holding a stick with a marker attached to the end - not a long stick about the size of the vive controller - Now imagine signing your name on a dry erase board. Ok - now imagine signing your name "in the air" without any physical object pushing back. Now imagine signing your name with a normal pen on a piece of paper that's on a desk.
>That's the difference.
The tablet is essentially a piece of paper on a desk with a pen. Vive's tracking is like signing your name in the air with a 3d tracked marker - and it shows in their "paint" demo.
It works as somethign fun to do - it doesn't work within a precision workflow.
---
Places VR will be great for in 3d asset creation -
>Environmental creation for blocking out
>reviewing and QCing asset creation and design
>Level design review and possibly level design blocking out
>Atmosphere direction and review.
It will be good for department heads (once all the software has been created and curated) - to review the work on big AAA project. Take the starting tavern in Witcher 3 - in the future project leads will be able to "walk around" inside of it to make sure everything is as it should be.
Or to look at an asset up close in a fluid manner- like GranTurismo cars - they will sit in them and make sure nothing is clipping and all the textures look good.
What VR won't be used for is any sort of precision work - this includes any mesh work - it's way too imprecise and it has not tactile anchor point (not practical anyway).
Maybe in the future they will have more precise tools that will let you lean against a physical wall with a VR pen and draw/design in the virtual world - but we already have that, it's called a drawing tablet.

No - because looking to VR for 3d productivity is like looking to blimps for air travel -
Yes -there are some benefits - but there are obvious drawbacks - but apparently only those who actually use the programs understand these drawbacks.
Like I've laid out - what makes things like zbrush work (ignoring maya or max which need you to be able to enter in values all the time) - is the tactile anchor of the tablet. The same way you can write easily on a desk - and less so on a large book placed on your lap - that instability to the point of having NO anchor (Vr tracking) makes precision work impossible. This isn't an opinion thing - this is glaringly obvious to anyone who has ever drawn on a piece of paper before. Then again what I'm replying to is bordering on shill or bait - not sure which, maybe both?

Something you do all the time when you sculpt amirite? And when you need it you can easily add 3D UI popups for precise number selection.
The major obstacle is that VR interfacing is a very new so there have been very little time to experiment with interfaces and to get used to said experimental interfaces.
Or perhaps hunt and peck typing in computer naive keyboard users are a proof that touch typing is impossible and cursive will always be faster?
While we're on the topic of futuristic displays, I had this idea for a hologram: If an electron emits light when it falls an energy level getting closer to the nucleus, then wouldn't it also emit light if you fired an electron off and then created a field of positive charge, so it's like the electron fell towards the nucleus?

>>333034326
>It took Halo to make the genre work on consoles.
Yeah because Goldeneye doesn't exist.

Yeah the only difference between then and now is that Virtual Boy was just 1 Japanese videogame company just selling a product.
"Modern VR" is three tech companies urging that "The tech is there" and exploiting gaming media to pretend their unfinished, poorly designed product have been fully realised and that they aren't just a bunch of prats with egg on their face for even thinking they could produce good VR.

Eyesight isn't damaged from having a source of light near your eye. It's damaged from focusing on close stuff for long periods. Even reading damages your eyes if you do it for too long without breaks to focus on stuff that's far away. VR will actually be better for you since you'll usually be focusing on a far off spot like you would in real life. The lenses create optical distance, so even though the screen is only a few inches away, it's like you're looking at whatever you're supposed to be looking at.

Hold on- are we talking about VR for console or consoles themselves?
I'd been wondering why there were no fucking games for the thing yet. As I'm sure it can't be that hard if tons of indies are doing it.
Then their TOS comes out and says if you use the Rift for development, they can literally do whatever they want with your game. Including giving it away to everyone in the world for free without giving you a cent.
This is so much worse than the Xbone. But it effects developers only, so most people just don't realize how bad this is going to crash and burn yet.
>>333036314

You're a clueless fucking moron and you should be fired out of a cannon into the sun.
Halo didn't invent shit. In fact, you could objectively label it as the game that RUINED console FPS games irrevocably.
Instead of aiming for a fun arcade feel due to an inferior control scheme, Halo chose to implement lazy auto-aim garbage to make dumb casuals feel like they were actually playing the game instead of just letting it do everything difficult for them. Regenerating health dumbed the genre down to new lows, and the 2 weapon system made combat dull.
Nothing could be thought up with the current hardware on offer to make VR gaming valid. It's objectively worse than existing solutions for the only genre it might have had any impact on, sim games. Inventing a new genre? You're just going to end up with Wii Sports 2.
VR is dead because none of the VR producers have officially endorsed VR porn, and taken the mantle of the definitive VR porn system.

>B-but the price!

This doesn't mean anything. Videophone was pushed hard. 3D TVs were pushed hard.
What matters for hardware are 2 elements. Does it drastically reduce cost over an existing product? No. Does it bring something new to the table that people will be interested in for more than 5 minutes? No.
What actually is the future is AR. But that's a completely different type of technology.
>>333036879
I think he meant to say that it "introduced" things that were there already in other games and made them popular and then others copied it as well. Nice strawman though.

That's why I am and will always remain the anti-hype.
I don't get excited when something new is announced or released. When it does finally release, I'll check it out either in a store or through a friend who was dumb enough to buy it day one, cause I have several of those.
Once I feel like the product is good enough for the price they're selling it at, I buy it. For new technologies this usually takes between 2-4 years depending on how fast new models are developed. I remember having to pay a fortune for SD cards way back, now they're cheap as can be.

The Wii was popular with the normies because it was affordable
Buying a piece of gimmick hardware for 500-800 dollars (even more expensive outside of the US) is not affordable. Normies would rather just buy a fucking console and some games.
>>333036825
It's going to sell well on opening night but so did the fucking Kinect. I just don't think it has enough product quality to justify longevity. To call this the future is at best a pipe dream. In three years 90% of these headsets are going sold at yard sales for 5 dollars or filling up landfills.

The biggest mistake in investing in these VR things is that it's first gen technology. It's 100% certain than within very little time they're going to improve on the technology, and then release a new system. And then you have spent 800 dollar on an outdated piece of crap

>Normies would rather just buy a fucking console and some games.
The normie market has almost completely shifted to phone apps. And for normies, phones are basically free because they buy them on contract.
VR could have actually made it if Apple decided to bundle a cheap piece of plastic like the Gear VR in with their new phone, but it'd increase shipping prices too much due to the extra size. PC based HMDs never had a single hope in hell, there just isn't a customer base for them.
>Oculus Rift induces horrible eyestrain and migraines within minutes of use
THE FUTURE
>>333037128
I think you are projecting your inability to read as bending words onto me, if that is even possible. What I was trying to say is that halo ripped off older games and then other games ripped off the popular halo. I never denied the influence of halo, that was the other guy not me. It would be a contradiction. I am speaking about originality here not denying facts.
>>333037071
>The Wii was popular with the normies because it was affordable
The Wii was popular for the same reason the NES was popular, it didn't look like a video game console.
Console market was dead, so the NES was sold as a entertainment system. Wii sold like hotcakes to normies because it was sold as a fitness device / party game.
If you seriously think "X did well because it was cheap" is a thing, you're an idiot. Just look at how popular iphones are. Piece of shit tech, over priced to fuck, but they make bank because its a known brand, popular and normies don't want to have to think about things.
VR will be the future when its branded correctly, literally all that is needed. AppleVR or iVR etc.
>>333037156
Solid point, but if these fail to sustain profit after release we could see a huge time gap between the first and next generation.

Google runs Youtube, Chrome, Maps, Gmail, Android - everyone knows Google isn't just search engines now and everyone blindly trusts Google without a second thought.
If you don't think Google has brand recognition you need to go outside more. There were people lined up for Google Glass but brand alone wasn't enough to push it because it wasn't affordable to everybody.
The Wii was successful not just because of gimmicks, but because it was cheaper than both other consoles. The competitive price point is what drove home the gimmick.
