Alright, just finished watching the first episode.
It was a decent and quick recap of the first case in the game in case you hadn't played it, or for those who hadn't played it in a long time. That said, it being 1:1 is boring, and there's no real reason to watch this over just booting up your DS, aside from time concerns or simple laziness, as the game is much more engaging in every way.
The animation is pretty cheap, but it does the job. The music is honestly what came off as the cheapest to me, but at least they include tracks from the game. OP was especially odd, but certainly a blast from the past. ED is cute, though. I'll give them that.
I will probably continue watching it, but I see why people are disappointed, as it's true that the series deserved better. Read the mango instead.

Nah, Death Note was an excellent anime adaptation. All blame should be pointed at the creators of the original manga for dragging the forced and boring story after L's demise. In that aspect 2-part live-action is actually better than the original (even though it gets semi-sequel pretty soon).

Maya is unsure of herself as a medium.
The lipstick represents Maya missing Mia and trying to be more like her.
Her merging with her astral self represents her physical form connecting with her spirituality and coming to like herself as she is.
By the end she successfully applies the lipstick, showing she is now as sure of herself as Mia was, and has moved on. She then wipes off the lipstick as it's not part of who she is and she no longer needs it.
The sunflowers represent Nick. The design of his attorney’s badge is of a sunflower with the scales of justice in the center and is based upon the real badges worn by defense attorneys in Japan. Sunflowers are seen to symbolize freedom and justice owing to their habit of always facing the sun.
The prominence of the sunflowers represent Nick’s role/importance in Maya’s journey.
This was kind of her character arc when she ran away back to Kurain village at the end of AA1 because she felt like she was completely useless to Nick and she wanted to become a better medium as she is heir to the village.
