Hyper Light Drifter

It is extremely difficult. ITT: Tips and advice for me because I've dumped my time into it since i bought it 10 hours ago and have yet to beat a boss.
>>
Its near the point where i think its horribly balanced due to my getting undeniably ass-raped by the bosses
>>
The game often leaves no room for mistakes which means anyone who isn't an absolute git gud autist is gonna have a hard time
>>
>>332995389
I can tell. Dark souls doesn't even have near this level of timing perfection.
>>
Just dash more retard, it's not that hard.
>>
>>332994148
I feel like this game is only easy for me because I've played a shit ton of Link to the Past and Dark Souls. It seems to draw a lot from those games combat styles.
>>
>>332996447
Helpful, didn't consider that. Given only 3 actions, dashing being one, i personally thought "Hey, man, fuck that shit. I'm going to stick with shooting the shit." You're a fucking genius, asshole.
>>
>>332994148
I like that they didn't tell anyone they weren't filling the goals for coop and took out people's pledged enemy designs because they didnt like them.

>>
I just hate the lengthy respawn animation. Alright so far though.
>>
>>332996756
Well, I've played a shit-ton of Dark Souls (and all of the similar games) and Nuclear Throne, which both seem pretty similar also. I just feel as if I'm missing some sort of damage increase or health boost. If not, i must be overlooking a mechanic.

East boss is easiest. Just attack once and dash out or just wait till he takes his time to barf out minions for loads of free damage. You if you launch the minions at him and they explode he drops to the floor for even more free damage.
>>
>>332996889
Yo, I don't know about any of that shit. Just by looking for some help online i saw some controversy surrounding it. I didn't support the kickstarter (or know about it before it i bought it today). That does sound like some shitty business practice, and I can understand some anger over that.
>>
>>332997223
Thanks, I appreciate it. If you know anything about the north and/or east boss, that would also be greatly appreciated.

>>
>>332997076
If you don't already have them, buy the chain dashing ability from the shop in town, and then get the gapcloser dashing slash from the sword shop.

Once you get those, you can maneuver in and out of combat much easier, and weave through enemy waves. Also try to work on figuring out enemy movesets and patterns, and learn to let them attack and then go aggressive while they are recovering.
>>
>>332997774
Very, very much appreciated. Many thanks.
>>
>>332997774
Also, is there any faster way to get the currency than just running around and trying to find the tiniest pathway in the most sequestered areas?
>>
>>332998240
Unfortunately not.
>>
I had a time with disco bird in the north. but once you get him to his last bit of health he actually is easier because he alternates horizontal and vertical rows.

How the fuck do you get in this room circled in green? It's not connected to anything so it's basically just a hidden wall hunt at this point. It's in the southern area.
>>
>>332999453
It's 90% Hidden wall hunt. You progress in the western area purely by slashing the shit out of every light green crystal
>>
>>332999351
once he reaches that point you can literally just run over to him and go apeshit til he dies
>>
Any tips on the whole key thing? There's these doors with like 4-15 blocks representing keys. Where the fuck am i meant to find them. Not to mention the weird ass map
>>
Anyone willing to buy a poorfag Hyperlight Drifter?
>>
>>333000121
You just have to explore more. Most of them are hidden over almost invisible black walls.
I have 14 now, one left till I can open the door on the right side of the city, curious about what is in there.
>>
Which one of the dash atacks is the best one to get? THe sword shop's or the dash shop'se
>>
Is it good? I remember seeing threads about it before it came out. Looks neat at least.
>>
>>333001206
This is a very good game, but it seems to cater only to the most extreme side of gaming. The people who check every nook and cranny and will spend time getting their timing pristine perfect
>>
>>333001403
It's pretty fun. I'd say at least a 7/10 Zelda clone with more dynamic combat and harder.

>>
>>332997510
North is hard. It helps to have chain dash, but I did it with no upgrades, since I headed north first.

Just slash at him when he teleports to another place and shoot him otherwise. When he is almost dead he will just non stop repeat the same two attacks, but deals a shit ton of damage.

Died a lot, but it's manageable once you learn his pattern.
>>
>>333001669
damn anon thanks :)
>>
>>333001767
Yeah, I feel the north boss is easier than west though. He just persists restlessly and his attacks have an astonishingly large range. On top of that, the unneeded adds
>>
>>332997039
In the latest patch you can speed that up by holding A/X
>>
>>333001767
north bosses attack fixed-shape is always the same as well

it's x then +

so you can dash vertical/horizontal to avoid the first, the diagonally for the second
>>
>>333001403
Not really. Every area is the same in terms of gameplay. Go north, east or west, find hidden keys, get upgrades. I was excited, but I'm going to end up not buying it until its either really cheap or gets more content.
>>
>>332994148
this game is hot fucking garbage

it seems to think that good difficulty = flooding rooms full of projectile shooting enemies that are stupidly hard to avoid

and since the game autosaves i was left with one health and no heals so i'm fucked and can't do anything

not that the level design or gameplay was all that fun anyway
>>

I seriously cannot believe how casual you spastic cunts are. You literally cannot beat the very "tumblr pixelshit SJW" games you constantly moan about. It's not even that hard, just dodge until you see an opening/pattern, then shoot a bit or whatever. Get the sword dash attack for true easymode.

But seriously it's a great game 9/10.
>>
>>333003953
that whole challenge is fucking absurd, even if people have managed it
>>
Just beat it. Missed a single fucking diamond, but it's not like it's required to beat the game or anything, just missing out on one last dungeon. Why do people keep saying the game was hard? The most I died on a boss was 5 or so times, and that was against the first boss, which happened to be the western one in my case.
>>
Beat the game this morning
Been looking for keys and upgrade tokens, got almost the entire sword and drift moves.

>>

Its not really difficult. It's just overwhelming until you get used to what's going on.

But I guess a lot of people expect to win on the first go. Instant gratification. It's a bit silly.
>>
>>333005028
>years
I imagine this is somewhat like riding a bicycle. You get rusty but get it back quickly (might be why you had trouble with the first boos you fought)
Also, in this case, i suppose i would be a casual. I'm not good at top-down action games at all (not from lack of trying see: 350 hours in binding of isaac and 50 hours in nuclear throne)
>>
>>333004987
It's nothing like that. Dark Souls is a game where you have to use several buttons and button combinations - it's best with a controller due to button layout, and making it more playable on keyboard would require simplifying gameplay elements. Hyper Light Drifter is best with a controller because the devs care too much about the visual presentation of their game to make the cursor stand on the top layer and be a color and opacity that doesn't turn nearly invisible in a firefight.
>>

>>
>>333005841
I don't support the 30 fps choice and would immediately download a mod or something of the sort to change it if said mod existed. However, I don't feel a frame-rate lock makes or breaks a game. It's a small gripe, but shouldn't be an argument for the game's quality (or lack thereof) on its own merits
>>
>>333006167
There is no difference to notice because you can't play the game at 60 fps
I don't think the game is bad because it's at 30 fps, the problem is there is no good reason for it to be. 60 would be better, and that's what it should be.

>>333006736
I just figured that part out recently. Remember that symbol on the blocks and you should know when to come back
>>
>>333002871
Explain.
>>
A couple of simple tips:

Buy bombs ASAP, and get the second one ASAP as well. Two damage AoE explosion that defuses most mobs in an instant. After getting the second one, I can open almost every battle with one, which makes the average enemy encounter much easier. Apparently some people go a long time without ever buying these, if even knowing they exist, and they're one of the best attacks in the game for basic enemies.

Shoot a lot. Every successful enemy slash refills an entire bullet. Snipe enemies that are going to mob you in advance whenever you possibly can.

Speaking of the above, you can quick-shoot by pressing RT without ever having to manually aim, it shoots in the direction that you're pressing. Use this a lot during battles.

Others have said this, but multi-dash is incredibly useful for general maneuvering and getting out of tight spots.

Play it like a faster-paced Souls game. Learn enemy patterns, position yourself tactically, play smart.

Good luck!

LMAO @ the rock paper shotgun reviewer for this game.

Map is kind of confusing because your character's icon sits arbitrarily in the zone you're currently in, but doesn't correspond to your specific location. Figure out which zone you're in from the icon, then figure out where you are/want to go based on the shape of the environment.
>>
Why are there so many people whining about the difficulty?
The game is nice enough to let you restart in the same room you died in without leaving any of your consumables used
>>
>>333007559
>>333008143

Building on that, the overworld map seems to lay out the main path fairly accurately, so if you can figure out when you enter the new zone, you can generally navigate based on the landmarks they include on the map, like broken stairways and stuff. Underworld map is a nightmare though.
>>
>>333008029

Given how much easier the game became with upgrades, I'm sure some people will start playing it without upgrades as a challenge. It certainly occurred to me. I think it's possible.

Buying the upgrades (especially the chain dash and bullet reflect) just felt like I was gaining all the stuff I felt like I should have had from the beginning of the game.

Also I agree, beating that boss was the most satisfying thing in the game for me, definitely left the biggest impression with how hard it was. I just kept at it because the first thing on the steam news list was some "games journalist" crying about how he couldn't beat the first boss and essentially saying that the game should let him win. What a faggot.

I found a ton of them by paying attention to the walls and floors. I guess I have some kind of talent for finding secrets in games. I also found tons of stuff that all my friends missed in my first playthrough of Shovel Knight.

Maybe you should think about where you would hide clues on each screen if you were a game developer.

Pay attention to when the camera shifts to hide an area from view that would otherwise be visible in your current position.

When the camera oddly frames a platform bordering empty space, run to the edge of that platform.
>>
it was a good game but not worth 21$. i didn't know about the content that was shown in the kickstarter but didn't get in. i also don't know what the fuck is going in some parts of this game. story minimalist bullshit doesn't work and seeing how they had a whole story and cut it made me wonder if the dev was really sick and wanted to release it
>>
>>333010198
except when it doesn't.

Take the waterfall cave for instance

at the very top of the map there is this wide rectangular pit that takes up the left side of the map.
It makes sense because parts sides of this map have always had pits on sides of the map (waterfall pit at the beginning, pits on the side as you went up otherwise)
There is absolutely nothing special about it and if you hug it the camera does nothing when you hug it.

However if you decide for some reason to hug the very top of that pit, there are a few pixels where your lil bot will activate and say there's an invisible platform.

That is not fun, that is wall hugging bullshit.

Remember the secret area with the 10000 flying birds you had to fight to get a triangle?
That one there was a little forested outcropping that if you did some finangling, you could dash to. It looked like something that could be something or nothing. If you reached there the camera would pan to a thing you could shoot to make a platform to go across to reach that area.

That was a good secret.

Just beat the West region last night and heading North. A few of things though:
1.) Are there any more keys in the West? I managed to find just one by a dead guy.
2.) Is the super cool blue cape a hidden item or can I buy it somewhere?
and 3.) In pic. related, is there a way to get to that yellow blip chip or do I need to come back later? There's a locked door in that area I'm not too sure how to open.
>>
>>333010652
Most of the secrets were wall hugging bullshit.
>>
Your bot can tell you about invisible platforms?
>>
So getting 100% has no extra final boss or scenario? That's bullshit.

2. all capes and swords are unlockable/hidden, not buyable

Yes, it can tell you but only if you're really close to it, like on the edge of the platform

I remember when I played la mulana, I loved exploring, solving the puzzles and discovering shit.

Not only was everything hinted at in a way that meant you didn't have to hug/whip every wall, but basically everything you something that was useful/helped you advance.

Here you just get a monolith which gives a dogshit skin at the end, a triangle, money (which quickly becomes useless), or a key (basically useless)
Finding shit doesn't feel rewarding because I don't feel like I'm clever or such for finding it, and the reward doesn't feel good because the reward always sucks.

Most clues are small visual changes like an off colored block or slightly changed portion of the wall. Problem is most of the game's architecture and colors aren't uniform. Try to explain how there is a tell for stuff like the water switches in the east or the crystal and tree mazes in the west.

>>333014087
Get the sword reflection.
Get the chain dash.
Get a dash attack.
Get a grenade.
Railgun is the best.
If you aren't killing enemies quick enough you'll get overrun.
Wait til your at 1 or 2 health to use a medkit.
Know how much damage each enemy does and what their attacks are.
You can't stun certain enemies with sword attacks, if you try to kill them when they start up an attack you are going to get hit.
Either focus on killing the biggest guy in the room, or killing off all the weak ones first.
Don't go west unless you have the chain dash.
Don't go looking for secrets unless you got the first key in the starting area, have the railgun, and have the chain dash.

zeldaXbastion something like that , about 2deep4you i don't really care about the story , gameplay is tight and responsive that's what keeps me playing
>>
>>333015721
kind of, its the most single damage gun, but railgun pierces, so if there's like 3enemies lined up it gets outclassed by railgun
>>
>>333015486
Different anon
I want to mention
sword reflect>drift shield
The shield is hit and miss in my experience and the only time I've felt it was useful off the top of my head was the robot guy faking to be a shard because it sucks up bolts for your gun.
>>
>>333015849
One of the best things about Bastion was that it was linear and just focused on the gameplay and RPG elements. Fuck this open world LoZ clone shit.

How do you do the fire panel puzzle in the east area? It's south of those large man eating plant things.

I can easily get past the area before it with fire panel timing, but this puzzle has no timing and seems to trigger you touch the panels. Do I just need to get the double shift skill so move faster?
>>
>>333016012
yea chain drift makes those panel 'puzzles' a lot easier, its possible with just damage boosting through but you gotta burn all your estus and shit
>>
>>333016012
The one that goes left, down, right, down, etc? You need chain dash and tap [dash] at the end of your dash to go again.
>>
>Every positive review has less than 5 hours played
>Every negative review has over 5 hours played

Pretty much sums up the problem with the game. It's very pretty and starts out with that strong sense of adventure and mystery, then it just kind of ends after 5 hours and you're left wondering if that's really all there is.

They delayed the game for two years to polish up the art, but forgot to actually finish developing the game.

>>

I would recommend it once they get co-op up and running
>>
>>332994148

its really not that hard, and the fact that the game has a very archaic fail state means that you can really just try and try again

do the areas in east, north and west because I feel like that is in order of ascending difficulty, and the shotgun you get from the east boss is really good. most important upgrades are probably the chain dash, charge slash and grenade -- just go for anything after that. lowest priority is probably ammo and health pack upgrades, those are mostly useless

the pink lines are there only to make it look fancy and make obvious the connections between rooms.

and to get to the southern area boss you need to take the elevator here

you actually only need 1 piece for the desert boss - you can get to him by taking an elevator and the path that leads to him is behind a door. there are 3 sub-bosses but you don't need to fight them (although you will inevitably stumble upon at least one or two of them).

Chain dash away from him, don't mess up and sputter out.
When he stops, back away he's going to smash the ground and do the golem attack.
Get in with a shotgun but dash in and out to smash his orbs back into him.
>>
>>333018327

Having chain dash helps a lot.

Try to bait him into destroying the crystals holding his buddies as soon as possible. He can smash them with his sword attacks.

When avoiding his sword combo I found it easier to dash up and down, it gave me more room to get away from the guy.

Remember his pattern: 3 sword attacks (get a couple of hits in after the last one), AoE crystal attack (just dodge), gun attack (alwasy 3 bullets, with the bullet reflect upgrade you can send them back to him)

He switches things up when he's a half health but the above strategies should still apply.
>>

The only thing that's hard is finding all the secrets. Stupid hidden walls is a shit way of hiding things. Used a couple of times, sure, but fuck even Zelda didn't have these many hidden walls.

The bosses aren't even that hard as long as you git gud and practice and use your brain to figure out the patterns. First boss assraped me until I figured out you could trigger him to kill his minions in the crystals before summoning them. After that it was still a challenge but nothing near impossible.
After defeating him and taking his gun you start to utilize the gun a lot more because it can one-shot kill smaller enemies which is incredibly useful, then once you get the bomb you can use it to stop smaller enemies from swarming you. Git gud, and most of all, THINK. The game is built like 80% around strategy and learning enemy tells. Don't be a goober.

Does the HUD indicate when you are near a hidden area at all? I beat the North boss and only have chain dash so far, almost have enough for the dash sword attack, but tempted to buy bombs now.

I'd like to get more of the upgrades but it takes forever to get the currency and its rather dangerous to try dashing around to find hidden areas.

Also how the fuck do you get the one early on in the north area. It's off to the right from the top of a building with no way to reach that far (right at the entrance to the 4th triangle up north after you beat the boss).

>>
>>333022798
That's where I would actually say that the lack of good music, or music of any kind hurted the most. It just made the world felt lifeless in a bad way, a lot of the time it feels like the ambient noise is place holder. Good music does improve the atmosphere
>>
>>333022619
they tried so hard for a dark souls feel, but in the end it felt lazy.

other parts they had to work harder for their vision (ie: visuals only upgrade shops) but it just made the game more annoying to play. I beat the game without ever really figuring out the dash shield, not that there was any need to if you had the reflecting sword.

Overall it felt like hipster faggots more concerned with making an art piece than a game trying to ride on the coattails of other more popular games (zelda/DS)

You'll die a lot, but the game auto saves almost constantly.
You'll die but you can try again over and over right outside the spot you died.

And it's not so much "git gud" it's learn to adapt to the engine limitations. So much relies on timing, that frame drops and skips will actually kill you, not your lack of skill. But after the first area, you get used to it.

The real challenge is trying to find your fucking way around in the world. The map is confusing, and progressing actually requires running into walls and checking for bullshit secrets. And there are plenty of glitches, flicker, sometimes running into a wall will even kill you.

That's hyper light drifter in a nutshell.

>Enter into a vicious war with the smaller races, results in a mutual doomsday that sets back technological and societal advancement by millenia
>The remains of the technologically superior civilization survives, in the form of an automated warfare machine that continually churns out new soldiers for the never ending war efforts
>At some point the AI either becomes infected or becomes aware that the war is over and it should stop, but cannot. Either it's infected by a virus or constrained by it's programming
>Manages to create clones and implants them with their own drive to hunt down and cure the infection/disable the AI, but all clones are cursed with a short lifespan, hence why all the Drifters see the Jackal and why they slowly die
>The player succeeds with his Drifter, destroying the AI Core, ending the threat of the AI. The Jackal represents the AI Core's subconscious programming that assists them in their goals, guiding them to their purpose

there are undoubtable flaws but its still a good well functioning game with enjoyable gameplaymechanics.
Artdesign of course is a matter of taste but I think its hard to not recognize how much effort is put in this game. It has is very own artstyle that is able to transmit a certain atmosphere.

It seems like nobody is shitting on the sounddesign.
>>
>>333026743
Next room to the north, there's a few shooting guys on the left side. Kill them, use the railgun on the target pillar so you can get over to that area. There's a hidden path in the wall that can lead you to that room.

>reach a corner
>s l i d e for no reason
>chain getting hit by the spikes in what is basically a stunlock ToD
>rinse and repeat
>when you get to the end you're greeted by monster spam that is nothing short of mario maker-level retardation
>no space to heal at all without getting raped
>basically have to bomb, attack, pray, and not die to getting crystallized by a crystal monster that was covered up by all the other enemies
>prize is a cape wooo yay

I'm playing on a craptop and getting almost no drops or skipping.

The 30 fps lock is vaguely irritating but hasn't really impaired my performance at all.
>>
>>333026925
except you get nothing for exploring and collecting everything

Nothing, same ending, same final boss.
It makes the extra exploration pointless. I did the bare minim of exploring (this I consider by checking each room in relation to my patience)
And most of the time it took me to finish the game was due to getting lost with the shitty map.

I clocked 18 hours, if I rushed it and didn't explore, I probably would have made 10.
>>
>>333026926
Didn't see that anywhere in-game. If I had to guess; Drifters are clones created by the Jackal AI to destroy the AI core, so they have a limited lifespan inflicted by some automatic cell decay or something. Hence why every Drifter you see has a cough. The worse it gets, the less time they have left.

Presumably they can still reproduce with no ill effects to their offspring. They just won't be around to see the kid grow up, depending on circumstances.

We don't know if the Drifters are clones or not, if so whether they have accelerated growth until they reach maturity and how long they might actually have from being deployed before they die. It might be years, or just weeks.
>>
>>333027024

>Putting this much thought into a shitty indie game

>Didn't see that anywhere in-game.

I saw it twice due to a glitch of doing the 4 sections out of order.
Before red dies he shows a woman and child in a bed dead, he put flowers on their corpses, and then he was being lead by the dog.
>>
>>333027137
It's a decent story. Gameplay might be lacklustre but it's a decent enough setting, serviceable enough to even run a game of tabletop with. Feel free to stay mad, though.
>>
>>333027086
Makes you wonder why a clone that's created to fight would start a life on his own, doesn't it.
>>
>>333027218
Ah, that was what that was? I remember seeing that, but I couldn't tell that it was his family or loved ones that died. Went by too quick.

Then yeah, I'm guessing that Drifters have a limited lifespan of a few years, probably a decade or something. Long enough to father a child and see them grow up at least.

>tfw no peers for the update magnet
>>
>>333027265
Well considering the lack of backstory and explicit storytelling, we just see Drifters show up fully armed with advanced gear with a driving need to seek out the AI Core. Presumably Drifters wake up in a lab somewhere, get kitted out from a locker and just wander around until the Jackal appears and starts guiding them. Might never show up for some of them, or take a longer time for others.
>>
>>333027265
Do we even know what the fuck drifter was doing before the game?

>>333027302
Or maybe they aren't clones and just random fucks who are decent fighters? The virus infects them, the dog tells them what to do through subliminal messaging which also causes them to die.

Meaning, that it's likely drifter isn't dead at the end of the game, just injured from the fight and he's cured. It panned up when he knelt down, he probably lived.

Also:
>kill final boss at full health
>it's just sitting there
>uh is there a second form or something?
>literally walk out of the room
>walk back to the top to the town
>you can actually do that
>walk back down
>still sitting
>swipe at him
>ending cutscene
>suddenly at 1 health

They really rushed the end, huh?
>>
>how to win in hyper light drifter
>dash constantly
>buy all the dash upgrades first
>obtain purple cape from dashing around the race course behind the dash merchant
>dash further than anyone has ever dashed before
>kill everything before they have a chance to attack
also kill the rare pepe to the south first, he gives you a crazy op shotgun

>>333027593
You could ride in a robot and control it and there was some fire area. Those are the biggest ones
>>
>>333027548
Unlikely. After the bonfire scene, which pretty heavily implied the entire stone complex collapsed ontop of him, it showed him standing in ankle-deep blue water as a mirror to the opening cinematics where the water was filled with skeletons and corpses.

Then a blood stain appears on his gut and he bends over in pain and it cuts away.

Presumably the Drifter died after completing his mission of destroying the AI Core.

The Drifters might not be clones but they're all linked by the Jackal and the cough that eventually gets worse and presumably kills them. It seems equally likely that they're clones with an automatic expiry date ala Replicants from Blade Runner, or they're infected fighters that are compelled in a similar way.

Clones seems like a cooler story though.
>>
So anyone else notice all those giants in production in the factory area?

Yeah.
>>
>if you do all the extra stuff you don't get an alternative "true" ending and a better boss battle

How can people fuck this up so bad? Is Guackamelee the only game lately that did the formula correctly?
>>
>>333027732
>ride in a robot and control it

he boots the thing up and shoots its lazer to open the door
cut content no doubt, but i don't think actuall being able to use robots were ever planned
>>
Damn, playing the soccer minigame is harder with the Anubis skin because his sword doesn't swing, it thrusts. Still fun, though.
>>
>>333027913
In the southern zone all the giants look like they're being 'fixed'. One even has cranes and stuff trying to rebuild stuff on it. Probably some part of the factory trying to revive it's makers.
>>
>>333026998
The trick for the end is to aggro them and then dash back to the previous safe spot, they'll all kill themselves following you.

But yeah, you have to be on point with dashes to not clip corners
The room is probably a hell of a lot easier on controller.
>>
>>333027913

If you go to 'Load Game' on a file where you defeated the final boss, there's an icon to the side of your file.

If you select it, it shows a scene of the Drifter in the collapsed area where his campfire was, covered in cobwebs. You can't move or do anything. I assume it's some sort of epilogue.

Heavily implies the Drifter is dead though.
>>
>>333028576
You actually can't open that door, you have to go around.
Shoot the pillar switch in the northern section of the room with the rail gun
Walk across the platforms that spawn
Walk through the wall at the spot where the floor tiles are different

If that was a demo, why are none of the areas actually in the finished product?
On one hand, I guess they didn't want people saying that they had already played a large section of it, but on the other there's probabaly tone of people who have the game now that never saw that demo, probably a much larger number than the first group in fact.
So why not let them play it? it was good content.
