It improved more than enough to make the gameplay better, and the lore is more interesting. Also a much better soundtrack. DaS just has a better connecting world, better NPCs and more equipment, but it plays much worse. I have almost 2K hours on DaS, I love the game, as I do with DeS, but Bloodborne has made it hard to go back because there are so many improvements. The mechanics blend together so well that unless you're playing it like it's Dark Souls, you'll feel how improved it is.
DaS feeling unfinished will forever keep it from being the best, and the gameplay elements I love aren't even intentional most of the time.
If you give me some crap about it lacking variety, I can only suggest you actually play the game on a deeper level. The weapon variants that change gem slots, and gem combinations, and things like rallying, all add a decent amount of depth that give it a lot of replayability.

Yeah let's fight two extremely agressive bosses at once that share no pattern or thought. That's fun.
Unlike Smough and Ornstien, which was cleverly designed this is just 3 of the same thing that's just bad.
It's bad. I don't say this often. It's just a very poorly conceived fight by incompetent devs who think thats what Dark Souls is. There is no reason for this fight to exist. I am learning nothing from it. No one enjoys it. It's a fucking disgrace on the name of Dark Souls.

No, listen. The first one is simple enough to take down. It's fun. But then it bum rushes you and makes you fight two of the same things at once that do not compliment each other. They are just two tall kids swinging a spear at you. There is no thought put into this design.

Dark Souls 2 unfortunately revolves around the idea that players absolutely will summon either an NPC or other player as well as PvP.
You're right that it lost a lot of what made previous games great, which was that allies weren't a guarantee and enemies were at every corner.
