There is a very obvious business plan in place as to why it is free.
Microsoft has shifted their business model to be selling services as opposed to products.
They give you Windows for free and then they have more people ready to buy Office 365, Onedrive and Skype along with any Apps like Killer Instinct or Gears of War.
The free W10 period is pretty much them advertising their "ecosystem".
They're building their installbase.
Let me give you another example.
Remember when PS3s were being sold at a loss?
Someone might say "well why would Sony do that?"
And the answer was of course they were growing an install base to sell software to.
Same for MS now, they're selling software and subscriptions off the back of these giveaways.
