The line between the two is really fucking blurry and often the same thing - but you can totally refer to it as an adventure game as well as a visual novel. A "pure" visual novel would be something that only ever has a few dialogue options, if that. AA has way too much gameplay for that.

It looks a lot better in the actual anime, but that's probably because the court doesn't require a lot of animations. The only time it really looked jarring in the actual epsisode was when the courtroom model lagged when turning to Nick for his objection.
Pacing wasn't awful, and the way they handled the evidence with the monitors and the close-ups was nice, a lot better than the Dangling Grandpa anime which was just bad.

But those are shitty things and what's holding back video game adaptations in my opinion. The director tries to be too literal and copies every visual aspect. The green text boxes are especially horrible, could live with the rest.

I kind of agree. But that puts this anime even in a worse position. Video game fans won't be satisfied by how low quality it is, while newcomers just won't get the same experience and won't get it. Pinning Sahwit was hype as fuck first time, and anime did not translate that really well. There are ridiculous moments like those blows, but it's simply not the same. And show is too fast for average viewer to process evidence himself. Albeit, I admit it's just first episode and maybe we'll get more screen time on more difficult cases.
Really, I was ready for absolute shit, but instead found a little bit of hope I didn't know I had. I'll stick around with this one.
I couldn't make it through the first episode, it's really damn bad.
