The way this works is that if you hit another snake, you die. No matter what size they are relative to you.

After experimenting a bit, it looks like you have to try and trick other snakes into running straight into you and they die for some odd reason then you can steal its strength and grow larger.

It's pretty easy to dodge the little snakes if you just start to avoid them before they make their attack. If you turn back on yourself and go the opposite direction your entire body is literally a giant impassible wall

In agar.io, bigger targets than you are immune to you, and the only way to get bigger is by harvesting or killing big targets.
In this game, scavenging is important in becoming large, and small players hold a combat advantage over big ones.
Although, being big is still useful because small players are pretty helpless if you can make a huge inescapable circle containing multiple snakes.
