I really love Vesperia's battle system more than the actual characters, as it allows you to do some really fun shit. The problem is that stat inflation is a massive problem in this game, with many endgame/postgame bosses with millions and millions of HP.
Symphonia is probably my favorite out of the three simply because I love its soundtrack and characters more, although the battle system is pretty dated. Oddly enough, it feels more 'balanced' in the sense you have to take into account positioning, but Raine and Genis really suffered from having no way to defend themselves unless you kept spam casting to try and instant cast Holy Lance or something.
Abyss was good. Free Run broke the game once you knew how to abuse it, but FOF was a good idea that I wish to see return someday.

I really loved on Symphonia had so many elements in it. Ex-gems/skills, two movesets for each character, summons, relationship system, route based party members that actually affected the story, lots of extras and secrets, good music.
Vesperia was great, Abyss was good. Everything else has been 6/10 at best. Really sad.

Are all the modern Tales combat like this? Not only the camera was terrible but the action was a mess and the special effects too flashy to the point it felt like a clusterfuck. With bigger enemies was even worse, with your character glued to the monster while executing attacks like some kind of old chinese mmo.
Edna was pretty cute, though. The opening is also one of the best I ever saw.

I've been working on Xillia 1 off and on for a year now. It's been hard to fully get into and I keep putting it off to work on other games. Once I get around to beating that, I'll probably go for Hearts next, then Xillia 2.
I need to get my hands on some of the other 2D games, specifically Destiny DC. To this day I still prefer 2D Tales games to the 3D ones, even if I only ever got around to playing two of them.

I'm replaying Vesperia, but this time on ps3 so I can practise my ルーン語. It's amazing how after all this years the whole worldmap/town/dungeon classic structure feels so engaging. I miss worldmaps damn. I hope FFXV gives back at least something of a closes experience to those times.
Estelle japanese va is almost too damn cute. I'm not sure about the rest yet. Yuri is fine in both dubs. Karol (fun fact: Jap Karol va did the gibberish for Klonoa) is still annoying, but in a different way. I like Rita but as someone already said, she is generic Tsundere312.
Now I'm thinking about how Vesperia is basically Star Wars, but without Luke and making Han Solo (less greedy) the mc.

They redid a lot of the spells, I don't remember if spells stops time in the PS1, but I remember SNES and GBA do it. More fluid combat, redid the sprites to look better and added grade shop.

That's isn't true at all, the party in Vesperia has different idiosyncrasies and all pretty indepent, the only ones that look up to Yuri are Karol and Estellise.(And Karol still opposes Yuri at one point which you would know if you played the game)
There is nothing broken in the PS3 versions, enemies after the Wandering Swordman tech out pretty often from combos.(but you are still able to punish those tech outs, which are limited in amoun, if you learn their patterns , unlike in Xillia for example)
If you want an example of sucking dick to the MC for no good reason and constant shilling, Xillia is two blocks downot .
Not even the game with a literal self insert for an MC was as bad in that regard.
It doesn't help that everybody except Alvin is a one dimensional boy scout in that game.

That was the best part, especially when those bosses did not had stupid armor shield with counter that they in current games. They had small shield but you could break it with specific amount of dmg and keep your combo going with good skills. Doing 500 hit combo, tripple hi ougi's, burst arts, etc... that was fun.
Gameplay was and still is great but what I loved the most were those Secret Missions in boss fights, where for example you had to shot Yeager in a heart with Raven's arrow after he uses his hi-ougi.

I played through Symphonia and Abyss with 3 friends. Nowadays I'm only playing Tales games with 2 friends because one guy moved away. Unfortunately many of the recent games like Xillia and Zestiria completely kill co-op with their linking and character fusing systems, so we're playing older games instead. It's more of the same. The world is a copy paste with few new areas. The plot is fairly interesting but is told in an episodic sort of way where you have to pay back money and at some intervals you can make a choice to advance the story a bit. The game has a good finale and the battle system is a bit better, but if you didn't like the original a lot, then I don't think you'll like Xillia 2 much better.

I had a much harder time playing through the Symphonia port on PS3 after having playing Graces and Xillia. I was enjoying the story again, but the AI was garbage tier, so it made battles difficult as fuck because I'm just carrying all the weight alone. I was pretty close to throwing Kratos to the fucking wolves because he just sat around being an idiot.

Graces is pretty light on darker tones and pretty big on heart. People knock the story for being juvenile, but I think it's nice. If you want something lighthearted, that's probably the game for you. Also, the gameplay is probably the best in the entire series.
