Hey /v/,
Freelance 2D animator here. It's very likely that my next paying gig will be an animation for Warframe, which is a game I know very little about. The devs will supply reference models, backgrounds etc, but I'd like to get my own research in to make sure the animation actually matches what players of the game expect the characters to move like, etc.

Currently, the script I've been handed is full of terms, locations and weapon names that are kind of meaningless to me, having never seen them in action.

Do you know of any decent Youtube beginners' guides or longplays of the game? I've been looking but holy shit these Let's Plays have such insufferable commentary.

I would just spend a little bit of time playing it yourself. Not too much since it's a pretty shit game but enough to get an idea of what the world is like.

Also put in a good word for me. I've tried applying there with no response as a software dev.

Just play the game for yourself or maybe do some animation exercises to loosen yourself up.

Seeing that you have an animation gig lined up it sounds like you have everything in order. I think it fair to say that at this point there is no point in asking for /v/'s opinion on anything, since you actually have a life. Good luck guy, best of wishes

Honestly - Total Biscuit did a pretty good expose on Warframe recently and he breaks down the essence of what makes the game appealing - you should look that up. It's a fantastic primer for an outsider.

Read the wiki, visit the /vg/ thread, turn on a random twitch streamer and mute it, or just play it. It's literally F2P on PC, PS4, and Xbone.

General idea behind it though is that you play as a space ninja in the form of walking, humanoid armor (frames) controlled by alien children to fight enemies which include a race that clones too much, a race that only cares about business and robots, infested zombies, and void tainted versions of said enemies. It's a F2P grinding game focused on speed and acrobatics with players rushing through levels and decimating anything in the level. You grind to get more equipment which allows you to grind for more equipment.

Just do us all a favor: if you're animating something try to make it where shit won't clip everywhere. One of the biggest issues the game has is that it gives players the ability to wear long flowing capes and tassels despite having animations where that stuff gets caught, stuck, flips out, or just goes right through the character. There's a reason I stick to animations for my frames that don't have a lot of body movement. The more simple and subtle the better since every frame has ridiculous neon lights and they fly around 24/7.

Haha, cheers. I can't really say much (and the deal isn't finalised yet. I just figured it best to get some research in just in case) but hopefully the dealine will be enough for me to make the characters looks nicely detailed and pretty crazily animated.

Let me try to be helpful then. Best tip, warframe showcase videos are your friend. They give you a solid rundown what a warframe does and maybe some ideas on what they should do.

Grab some kung fu animu, not something with a really high power level like Dragonball. That's pretty much how frames should fight.

I have not played in a while so I'm sure I'm not the best person to help

The gameplay for the most part is running into a room and turning everything into red goop, but if you want an better picture of the world it's in reading the various lore paints a better picture.
The rhino p codex, Ember, everything cephalon semaris has, etc. The entries are all on the wiki. There's a few lore discussions on the warframe forums that I usually end up glossing over, though people often get the Dark Sector and Warframe lores mixed up.
Dark Sector was a previous game DE made and most references in Warframe are mostly homage and nothing more.

Watching someone play well will not show you how to make the character move in any realistic way. Mobility has always been abusing one specific part of physics to go shazbot levels of fast for a little bit.

Ideally it really is just kung fu ninjas with guns. A warframe can leap from Point A to Point B every time if not obstructed, and every melee weapon they pick up has an ancient martial art to go with it.

Post the names of things they might want in, if you're able. We could help find some simple showcase videos (or even make some)

I quit the game becuase fucking DE kept nerfing my mains. I started playing at launch and there was a bug where Rhino's schematics wouldn't drop, took me almost a month to get it, and then they nerfed it. Then I started playing trinity, and they fucked up the invulnerabilty as well. they can go fuck themselves.
