It was considered as much by fighting game snobs back in the day, because it simplified fighting game controls to something everyone could do without any complex inputs.
If it released nowadays it probably would be loved by idiots heralding it as an easy to get into fighter that will save the community by bringing in young blood, like rising thunder was suppose to be.
If nothing else, I loved that it had a huge amount of lore you could read up on in the game's extras, and so much of it isn't actually shown or referenced anywhere else in game and was something I wish had been expanded upon with another game.
