When you think about it, this was the most likely outcome at this point. They can't reuse the detective from AA5, a new character for the role would've already been announced by now and thus it was likely to be a returning character. I don't expect Gumshoe to still be stuck being a detective especially after AAI2 implied he'd begin moving up (now that Edgeworth is chief prosecutor, I think Gumshoe must be chief of police), while Ema was absent from AA5 but she was mentioned as still being a detective, so her return would be nothing too unexpected.

Ideally, I'd have it like this.
Edgeworth is the Chief Prosecutor and doesn't typically handle cases anymore, and he never needed an official assistant before, so I don't see why he'd need one now.
So instead of Kay being his "assistant", I'd have her become a prosecutor, and despite getting a raise in AAI2, I don't think he's competent enough to be Chief of Police, so I'd just have him as a veteran detective and they could pair him with Kay.
Justine is a judge, but they'd never replace the based judge. However, her conversation with Edgeworth at the end of AAI2 talks about corruption and the "contradiction in the law" which heavily reminds of the dark age of the law shit they had in Dual Destinies. It leads me to believe that Justine was some influence on Edgeworth pursuing Chief Prosecutor position, so if they really wanted to bring the dark age shit up again, she's someone I'd push in there for.
Will Ema still be annoyed at Apollo? What about Athena? Widget and the Mood Matrix are pretty cool, scientifically speaking, they might hit it off.

I was expecting a series to change at some point. The devil's in the detail, Ace Attorney will always be about Turnabouts and Murder trials, so you have to find your creativity elsewhere.
Dialogue is a big one, where the writers are generally constrained with a Law & Order episode for the cases, the character banter is where the writing shines, but it's the same character over and over and over and over and over and over again, the back and forth only lasts so long between archetypes. It's getting old.
...and not changing anything else, I.E. Costume Design, isn't helping.

Me too, but we both know that's not going to happen. Every writer, especially in mystery genres, has gotten tired and spiteful of their characters. If ever there was a game to Phoenix Wright, it was AA4, and they blew it with DD.
I genuinely don't believe changing the setting is going to fix anything. The series was never about where it was set, it was about the characters. General opinion on AA4 aside, I thought it was going to be the start of a new trilogy.
I thought we were going to retire Phoenix, and a nice redemption plot would do nicely, as well as to introduce Apollo. And that's exactly what we got.
And then DD came along, and now AA6. It's a travesty I swear.

Phoenix's redemption shouldn't have had anything to do with Apollo's story in the first place, his downfall turned out to be because Kristoph was butthurt over a poker game and Zak a retard, the jury system being set up for seven years and with Lamiroir being in the jury barely made sense and the last minute connection with Apollo to the Gramaryes was done so he wasn't completely irrelevant in his own game. Klavier was the main rival, the villain's brother and the one who got Phoenix disbarred, yet he's barely relevant and has no presence by the end of the case.
AJ should have started a new trilogy but the first game already wasted so much potential.
