What i always liked about Consoles was the contrast between games developed for it at launch and then after 5-8 years towards the end of its life. Giving devs a box within to work forces them to make the best they can with what they have. I always saw that as a reason why no matter how beefy your PC is, if a game is poorly optimized it's going to run like shit.

When people say the ps4 has no games they talk from the perspective of someone who built a pc sometime in the past 5 years. If they have a pc there is no reason to buy a ps4 for its multiplats. If they're gonna pay 400 dollars for for a system that's inferior than a 2011 pc it should have at least a bunch of exclusives to make it worth it.

Look at PCs. They have varied power and components, as such they have compatibility / optimization issues.
If devs work with one console, one toolkit, one set of parameters, they can better optimize and push the limits of those parameters. It's why a game developed in the last year of a consoles life cycle is leagues upon leagues better than something made at launch. If you start segmenting the console, breaking it into different groups you'll have a more patchy experience with Devs developing on one or the other, leading to worse optimization and one or the other 'version' under performing and you fucking over some part of your customer base you wouldn't have if you only made one console.
Admittedly the problems would be more pronounced in PCs than a console using similar infrastructure, but the power difference between 30 and 60 fps is enough to necessitate a fairly large gap in hardware that would lead to the problems we have with PCs of different hardware.

The Gameboy was large and ate battery, so they make the Gameboy Pocket. There was problems with playing the console in the dark, so they made the Gameboy Light.
They jumped half a gen with the Gameboy color, a better console that could display colors.
Then they made the Gameboy advance, which is a jump in generation. Realized the light problem was still there and it was hard to transport it, so they made the GBA SP that can fold.
Even the 3 PSP still gave some new features.

The better hardware they give you, the less profit they make, because they buy shit outdated hardware nobody wants any more by the bulk, and put it together to sell it to people in their plastic boxes, then hit you with a monthly subscription fee paying indefinitely for the privilege to play online on said shit hardware.
